Hi All

I had an accident at work banged my head and then started having all manner of symptoms which include twitches, anxiety, muscle spasms, poor memory, muscle stiffness, numb feet and hands, stammering , loss of concentration. Anyway, to cut a very long story short I have an insurance policy with LV to cover lifestyle and as I was being diagnosed which has taken 2 years, they have been paid on account . I have just received a phone call in which their Professor has decided that seeing I have had anxiety in the past and this is what causes FND as it is a mental health condition they are not going to pay. I have explained that FND can be caused by trauma. Are they right?

Thanks

Andy

Hi Andy,

Fnd can be seen by some as a mental health issue, which is balls.

I had a car crash and that triggered Fnd but was told by my insurance company solicitor they will try use my anxiety as an excuse to reduce payout , which it did! But I guess you can appeal etc

A life policy is obviously different type of payout but I would ask them for details on an appeal process.

If you didn’t have these symptoms before and were off meds etc (you may not have been) then there is a way to show seizures etc started purely after the incident - that is your case there.

Anxiety is separate from FND. A person with anxiety usually can work. A person with, "twitches...muscle spasms, poor memory, muscle stiffness" cannot work as well. Also, there are pills that people can take for anxiety, but there really aren't any pills for FND.

If the insurance company stops paying, at least there will be a good side to it; patients are more likely to recover from FND when they do not receive disability compensation because of their FND.

Hi Andy, there are many ways to develop FND, everyone has different symptoms and developed FND in different ways. None are the same as someone else. But we all suffer in different ways. For 17 months I was treated as having anxiety and depression, I never started on my FND journey with anxiety and depression, I developed it after 17 months to get to professor Edwards in London who immediately diagnosed FND and put me on the waiting list as an inpatient in London for rehabilitation for 1month for FND. Mine started through sciatica which after 6 weeks of agony with no help from the dr progressed up my shoulder into my neck, face and eventually my brain. I paid privately for a greater occipital brain block which to this day has stopped the pain in my head. Anxiety and depression is a drs excuse as they don’t know what’s wrong when all tests show there is nothing physically wrong. I have never had a seizure in my life until the spasms reached my neck. Personally I believe from what you have wrote, the trauma you experienced from your accident at work have caused your FND but your insurance are using your past anxiety as an excuse not to pay out. The fight we have to prove that we do have a debilitating illness goes on year after year wether your insurance company, pip, esa, are so disbelieving is frustrating, stressful and plain wrong. NONE of us want this illness we would ALL just love to have the lives we had before. I’m sorry that you are experiencing more stress and worry from your insurance company. I do hope you can provide some professional proof that your FND symptoms only started after your accident at work. Good luck and thinking of you.

Also Andy, I was told in hospital in London for FND that they could not cure me they could only teach techniques to cope with FND symptoms to improve my quality of life. I’m still struggling on even though unable to drive, unable to walk far, noisy environments are a definite struggle but I still put myself forward to hopefully get more and more of my previous life back as mush as I possibly can. If rehabilitation for FND have told me they are unable to cure me, I really do not think that they would have lied to me about this. Without my disability payments I would not have a roof over my head today.

Thankyou a lot I have just started another battle that’s my employer!!! Who thinks they can do whatever they want.... so a solicitor is dealing with them. They did not pay all the sick pay I was entitled too. But never mind it will all come out in the wash!!!
