Worsening symptoms with periods

Hi All (well ladies šŸ˜Š),

I was wondering if anybody else suffers with their symptoms worsening with the build up to their period at all?

I seem to be a lot worse with my symptoms when my hormones are changing.

Hi Sam,

Yes, my wife Kim has her symptoms worsening when she has her periods, in particular, her spasms.

I think it could be due to your body's responses being more heightened during this time.

It would be interesting to hear from any others who have this, and what their feelings are on it.

Maybe it's hormonal and signal issues, but I'm not too sure.

Glad you brought this issue up Sam.

Best Wishes!

Tony & Kim

Hi Sam!

To answer your question, yes, I do find that my symptoms tend to ā€œflareā€ at that time of the month.

My personal take on it is this: women in general are weakened and run down at this time...so you add that on top of what our bodies deal with, it doesnā€™t surprise me that a flare up would happen.

I also should mention that I had asked the same question a while back in a fnd group and I had over 30 comments from other women dealing with the same thing. So please know, you are not alone in this. šŸ˜Š

Hugs,

Amy

Hi!

I don't really remember if my symptoms got worse during my period, but i do believe there is a hormonal component to this disorder. I personally grew 5 cup sizes within a year and another girl i know who had my disorder grew 6 inches in one year during high school.

I don't know if this will help you at all, but i just wanted to share my two cents :)

OMG yes! Since my FND has progressively gotten worse, so has things like the menstral cramps- being some one who didn't suffer from it to being incapable of moving or functioning sue to the pain in the last 12 months during this time.

My sisters attacks come on almost every time she has that time of the month. It isnā€™t the only time she has the turns but it always happens during that time of month. Has anyone had a hysterectomy and if so did they find it helped to reduce their seizures/attacks.

Did u ever find the answer to this? I donā€™t know if hysterectomy is better or worse. My symptoms are definitely more severe right before and during menses.

Studies have been done about hoe Ons influences other chronical diseases which have to do with the nervous system. I find that the explanation of these could count for FND as well

Here's an article

The role of the menstrual cycle in affecting neurologic function in chronic disorders of the nervous system has received surprisingly little attention. Hormonal fluctuations are known to modify a host of physiologic and psycho-logic parameters in women. The purpose of this chapter is to review and explore the available literature on the effect of the menstrual cycle in patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) and multiple sclerosis (MS) and other autoimmune diseases. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) and stroke are other chronic neurologic conditions in which the menstrual cycle could affect neurologic function, at least on a transient basis. During the menstrual cycle, alterations in the systemic concentrations of hormones can produce direct and indirect effects on neurologic function. When superimposed upon the injured nervous system, these effects can be magnified and can result in changes in the functional abilities of patients and can worsen symptoms such as fatigue and spasticity. This is particularly true in patients suffering from MS. The time when this is most likely to occur is at the end of the cycle, when there is a sudden drop in the serum concentration of estrogen anprogesterone, and menses begins.

Topic is interesting to me because since 2018 I have had issues with my mentrual cycle since. It has been clear thru my blood test that my hormones that is created by the pituitary gland is definitely elevated. I honestly believe it is partly why I was diagnosed with FND as well. I noticed for awhile in I believe the year of 2019 until Aug 31, 2020 I had symptoms either before or after my cycle of dizziness, nausea, headaches, &vomiting (I will check my calendar to see if I mentioned all symptoms on here because I started documenting periods because they became so uncomfortable that I started missing work & sometimes school if I didnt force myself to push thru, which is when I contacted my obgyn because now it started to affect my job). What I use to do to stop the pain during my cycle had completely stopped working in march 2018. Had to see obgyn while I was in school then. Also in 2019 after seeing my doctor at the time she wanted to start me on birth control to see if that would help symptoms but I declined because I told her I want to know the cause before consuming anything. Obgyn recommends abdominal surgery so she could go inside to see if I had endometriosis or any related problem to why my periods were unbearable. Prior to surgery obgyn order ultrasound. Results revealed a cyst. But I ended up not doing operation because I got on a supplement called Womens Best Friend, which did absolutely wonderful when in system plus it was natural and also after me 4 other surgeries i said i wouldnt do surgery anymore unless absolutely necessary. Some days after work I would have to come home and take benadryl and Zonfran because of those symptoms. I would wake up the next day ready and feeling fine. Referring back to partly, before I ever began my cycle as a child in elementary I had a seziure at the dentist office, following 2009 surgery woke up unable to breath in recovery, 2012 & 2013 I had seziures in recovery after both surgeries, which on the last one Dr. Recommended I see a neurologist. And as of Aug 31, 2020 I have had experience many symptoms that has cause me to be disabled as of now. . I will check out article thank you.
