With $2K cap on drugs, why not darolutamide?

I think many of you are in a similar situation to me--metastatic, PSA more-or-less under control, but who knows for how long. At the moment most of us do not qualify for Part D coverage of darolutamide (yes, there are some ways to get help, but, again, many of us do not qualify), but with the cap in 2025 all we need is $2K and a prescription. Given the excellent results and modest side effects (ARASENS for example--those with lower volume did particularly well), for those of us in the US it seems to me desirable to finagle a prescription from one of our docs and to start taking it.

c-a-fred - I've wondered the same about treatment choices for 2025 now that the drug cap is in place for next year. However, there will no assurance that the $2k limit will be there beyond 2025, so it might be a good idea to keep that in mind if making longer-term treatment decisions. Even in our forever changing political landscape, starting Jan 1 the cap does open up the possibility for drug choices that were beyond the means for some PCa patients on Medicare. *

The same risk will apply to the future of the annual 10-drug price negotiations that went into effect this year. Bottomline is that maybe we patients here in the US should stop having to subsidize drug costs for the rest of civilization.

Hope all continues to be well with you; i.e. staying S&W,

Ciao - cujoe

* The fact that this limit applies only to the Medicare Drug benefits, illustrates why we badly need some form of national health care; Medicare-for-all, or at least something better that the complex system we have now. I have a post I may get out tonight that discusses the 7 different ways that a drug prescription can be paid for. (Yes, Seven!)

Good point about after 2025. In this case I do not think there is a major problem with starting, and later stopping, darolutamide. and anyway I am aged enough that short-term solutions may be adequate.

Agree 100%. At a minimum it would provide a cost-contained trial for n=1 efficacy - Medicare + drug benefit required, of course.

Fred,

I can think of no reason not to try... Darolutamide is the best of the lutamides and why not?? Find an MD, and give it a whirl... and of course, post your n=1 here...

Take care, amigo...
