I finished Sbrt last September 2023. I’ve got a minor inguinal hernia that a surgeon just told me didn’t need surgery yet. But he went on to say that laparoscopic/robotic wasn’t an option because of my radiation Tx and the possibility of having to go in if a cancer recurrence. Only option was old school open surgery, with a longer recovery and higher risk of chronic pain.
This seems wrong. Any input/experience would be appreciated.

I have no direct experience with this issue, but...
I reviewed your profile and you had SBRT Viewray at UCLA, and your RO said that your treatment field was clear, and they avoided the bowel loop... I am a bit confused why the surgeon made those statements. Was there an ultrasound in that area post radiation and results that showed something, or was it by exam results that he stated this information??
If the truss is working, and you are comfortable overall, then you can wait and get another opinion, or even just wait... When a surgeon says that it is not time to operate, well... that's how he makes his living...
Thanks Fish. Yeah it seemed odd to me as well 🤷♂️ I’ll get a second opinion at some point. I’m in no hurry for surgery. After the last year I’d like to spend as little time at a hospital as possible.
I had my RPD and two hernias (right and left) repaired at the same time (in MSKcc on Friday, out on Sunday or Monday Morning - I forgot).... Few days (4 or 5, I forgot) of easy does it and then to MSKcc to have the Foley removed. Not a biggie if I recall since it was in 2002 with all "open" surgery. Get yourself a cane so it will help you when walking or climbing stairs while you're recuperating. Tally Ho!!!
I would like to see if anyone else is dealing with the same issues. I was disgnosed with bilateral inguinal hernas when I had the CT/MRI scans for prostate cancer. Now that I'm about ready to start radiation (seeds then 15 EBRT doses), I was concerned to hear that the hernias couldn't be repaired via robotic surgery. Miss running.
