So now I have a little time and I google "handshake message." other than telling me how to shake hands, I find the following:

a model of the structure of handshake message HS2, where nx_uint8_t stands for the network-serializable unsigned integer type.

To send and receive messages from other students and alumni on Handshake, you must have your profile privacy set to Community.

In electronic engineering terms a 'handshake' is just an acknowledgement message or signal between sender and receiver systems.
