I'm not an expert on benefits, so I would suggest using the Benefits calculator on the gov.uk website or calling one of the specialist organisations on the link below:

The Carers Trust may also be able to help:

Hi

To claim carers allowance he would have to be caring for at least 35 hours a week so perhaps you could add up how many hours he spends helping you out. Unfortunately it's not just what he does but how long he does it that seems to count. Carers allowance can also affect any other benefits he gets and I believe it is taxable.

This is from the Govt's own website copied and pasted "Carer’s Allowance is £58.45 a week to help you look after someone with substantial caring needs.

You don’t have to be related to, or live with, the person you care for.

You need to be aged 16 or over and spend at least 35 hours a week caring for them.

Carer’s Allowance is taxable. It can also affect your other benefits"

Hope that helps.

do you have direct payments for a carer/ personal assistant?

If you get direct payments through social care, you would lose your ca. Having said that you could potentially get more than what ca amount is. I pay £8 an hour for my pa's, so just 10 hours a week care through social services would be more than ca.

Silverstar I suggest that you call social services to see if you are eligible. You need to have assistance with personal care to be eligible, like washing and dressing. If so say that you would like to consider direct payments, so that they could bring the correct information with them.

You will be financially assessed to see if you need,to contribute towards this. For more information and procedure for your area, look on your local councils website and select adult social care.

Good luck

Jo

thank you for the answers, yes he is here more than 35 hours and sometimes he stays overnight if i am having a very bad day. no i don't get direct payments, i don't know what that is, i get dla middle care and high mobility. I can't afford to pay his out of this benefit otherwise i would. he is signing on at the moment and has been told that he cannot claim carers allowance and sign on at the same time, but carers allowance alone would not be enough for him to live on. would he still be able to claim his housing payments that would help him.

You can get direct payments in lieu of social care services through an agency. It might be worth thinking about, so although the ca may be affected, this could be cancelled out as he can receive more being employed as your assistant.

I need help with personal care, meal preparation, cleaning, laundry. I also get social activities paid for someone to take my daughter on outings as I can't.

I have 22 hours paid each week as a direct payment. You would be his boss.

It might be worth Google direct payment or personal budgets to gain more understanding. You would become his employer and its extra money, not that of your own unless you are financially assessed as contributing a small amount.

Your local adult social care team through the council are also available for advice.

Hi

As I said CA can affect other benefits and if he is caring for you then they might think he is not actively looking for work and withdraw his JSA. It's a tough one and I really think you should talk to an experienced benefits advisor who will be able to tell you more. It's not something that I think we would be able to answer for sure. CA is quite hard to get I think so I would contact your local Citizens Advice or Welfare Rights people.

I have no idea if this is of any use, but my friend is a carer and maybe your friend could care for someone else to balance things out? Really have no real idea about how or anything, but good luck - and wow, what a great friend he is to do all of this for you. You found a treasure there!
