Do a google search "wheelchair hire placename" for some one in your locality or where you are going to - there are loads of companies hiring and some will deliver to you as well.

In the past I have hired a wheelchair from shopmobility so if you have a local one pop in and see them, their rates are lower than some private companies too, Good luck

Hi Tulips,

If you have the choice hire a powered one that YOU can be in control of, mobility scooters are great. I've used them in shopping centres. You can go were YOU want when YOU want.

I say that because I have a normal one with big wheels that I can turn myself, but I'm waiting for a shoulder op so it's hard. My husband gets back ache stooping to push it, & tends to leave me facing a wall whilst he goes off for something as it's "quicker on my own"!

That drives me insane!!!!!! Thankfully I only use my chair if we are going out for the day. I am "too slow" to keep up with everyone & leave a silver trail behind!!! lol

sounds like just the thing 4 me going to a wedding & really value my independence - might be tempted to 'accidentally' roll over a foot attached to anyone trying to stop me/force me 2 go anywhere i dont like :)

If you go to the mobility shop you can get battery chairs which also fold for the boot of a car - great for holidays and shopping trips!

Mine is too bulky for that but has better suspension. Mine is paid for through the DLA mobility allowance - its leased for 3 years and has insurance, road tax, RAC cover and maintenance included.

However, if you only need it for a short time, and you don't need it to be self propelled, the Red Cross were great for me.

I do have a wheelchair too, through my doctors refering me to the local hospital. The lady on the phone was lovely and sent me a chair to try rather than wait for perhaps 6 months [depends on your area].

You can also buy them! I got my first wheelchair for £50. If you are going to buy you can get solid tyres which feel every bump but last or pneumatic tyres which need pumping up and replacing - quite difficult.

Good luck.

Soft hugs

That's really useful lots of info. thank you. I have a large scooter through Motability as well, have not been able to use it was housebound for a whole year. got ramp finally and had 1st trip out Monday and it felt amazing. Now it doesn't want to go at all (perhaps as i've been getting more & more claustrophobic it was just getting lazy). called the shop who said was due for service anyway, picking it up next Thursday. I have invite to the wedding of my very best friend of many years, for which the scooter wont be right anyway, i think it may be an idea to get something else as well for different occasions, may well hire if i can for this time and look at buying something if i can find one fit for someone of my size, which is a bit of an added problem! Thank you so much, getting lots of different feedback, i really love this site and look forward to signing in every day. Sometimes feels great if i can help somebody (as opposed to feeling like the useless leech-type bod. sat in the corner lol), or looking for advice myself, and really love Paradise's daily chuckles!!!!

if your going for a short break then the disability living foundation or tourist baord will have hire numbers; if you are fully diabled sometimes its free; but be crefull what type of chair you hire as they are not all suitable for different terrains regards su
