Have you been diagnosed anaemic?

I was diagnosed anaemic Feb and have been prescribed ferrous sulfate 200 mg to take one day for the first 10 days then increase it to 2 a day which I've been on ever since repeat prescription via GP(We get tax credits so our prescriptions are free). I've been told thats the normal dose amount but I would double check with your nurse to be sure. The nurse won't mind and will want you to take the correct amount for you. If you are anaemic you will need regular blood tests to monitor you. Full blood count and a iron level check. On the days of your blood test you need to fast and not take iron the morning of your blood test ( my DRS receptionist did not tell me this but luckily I googled onto nhs site and that told me I needed to do that). For me all though my full count blood test is now normal my iron is still low so I need to take ferrous sulfate for another 6 months and have another blood test. ( had my blood test in April) I found since being on it I have a lot more energy! My GP also advised me to eat dried apricots taking them as they can cause constipation and apricots helps prevent this. Also taking these causes black stools ( sorry if tmi). Hope this helps a bit x

Hi Skybid. Everyone's ferrous sulphate requirement differs. Best to get your GP to prescribe this for you, so you don't over or underdo it. May need to have a blood test first if you already haven't had one. Good luck! Diane
