Sugar bad, sugary fruit good, right? What do you think about eating a lot of fruit?

I keep getting the question of why am I supposed to give up deserts but eat fruit. We are creatures who like our pleasures and sweets are so appealing that we are drawn to overindulge but we are not good at weighing the relative value or risk of the things we eat. The common explanation is that there is something in fruit, since it is "natural", that is protective so we are encouraged to eat plenty of fruit. The natural good theme is appealing but it is really just a bit of biochemistry. The question you might ask is how safe is this wonderful glass of orange juice?

Actually orange juice is not a good choice because it is high in sugar, it is not the actual fruit which has fiber, msy have added things other than fresh oranges and mostly- vitamin C encourages the uptake of iron! Iron is the enemy of the liver for us because it it gets stuck there. Our blood is too thick with iron.

Overall, fruit can be healthy if eaten in the correct serving size as whole unprocessed food, eating fruits with lower sugar content and no more than 2 servings in a day. Also, eating a protein like a handful of almond or 1/4 cup of walnuts with the fruit reduces a blood sugar spike, adds to making it satisfying, and reduces cravings for sugar.

Fruit can add needed variety, a sweet taste, fluid, and needed vitamins and minerals and in some cases antioxidants to your diet when mindfully used. If you are tempted to eat a processed, iron containing floury, sugar filled, empty calrie high saturated fat dessert but eat a piece of fruit instead- that is a definite win.
