General thoughts/observations about refeeding after a longer fast

Hello.

I thought it might be helpful for me to amalgamate all the interesting thoughts which have been coming up about eating again after a more than 24hr fast.

I will try to link to the posts which I an remember as having lots of useful information in them.

My own anecdotes here:

Mine was shorter than some of our members, at 48hrs, and I had as my first meal: 400g cauliflower with some chicken and bacon mayo on the side. I had read that veggies and protein would be a good start.

I think mine may have been a little high in animal protein, and I didn't go for the 'just have a handful of nuts' approach, as I wanted to eat with my family.

My primary observation was that the taste was incredible! The cauliflower tasted so sweet, I couldn't quite believe I had cooked it in a clean pan. Had Mr Stoozie been making jam, and I hadn't noticed? No, he confirmed it was straight out of the dishwasher.

Second observation: I was a bit troubled that 400g of Brassicas on an empty colon was going to be disastrous, but nope, all has been well in that department.

After the cauliflower meal, about 2 hrs later, I had a fruit craving. I don't usually have much fruit, as I follow a generally low-carb approach, but I decided to try to listen to my body. I wondered if I was a little low in water-soluble vitamins, and particularly vitamin C as I wanted fruit.

I had a huge bowl of blueberries and 6 fresh figs. Again was a little concerned about gastic side-effects but all was fine.

For my next, longer fast I will ensure I have some plain yoghurt at the ready, as I expect I was spared as this was just 48hrs.

I think you have the right approach. My yogurt and berries, eaten in a supermarket cafe was frankly blah, and awkward. There was no pleasure in it at all. It was fine.

The small size was probably a good idea, as it didn't spend long in my digestive tract, a larger meal might have been disastrous.

Alternatively, maybe my stomach just did not want that food, and something more carby might have gone down better. I might plan a proper sit down meal with cutlery and company next time.

I think perhaps I just escaped some of the gastric unease because I didn't fast as long. I think you did amazingly!

I had 500ml of full-fat yoghurt at 10:00 and then, at 12:30 a low-carb carvery. (Not many potatoes, no Yorkshire pudding).

Do you deliberately buy a brand with certain probiotics S11m , or do you find all live yoghurts to be similarly helpful?

There are about as many different strategies for breaking a fast as there are for fasting.

Carbohydrate spikes blood glucose, which spikes insulin, which rapidly brings down your blood glucose - making you hungry. I do not need to be on a keto or very low carb diet, and my regular daily carb breakfast (grain-free buckwheat muesli, live full-fat yoghurt and fruit) makes me hungry for lunch.

I break my 68-hour fasts with full-fat live yoghurt, as it is low carb, and helps your microbiome by re-populating you "friendly" gut bacteria. After a long fast, I would suggest that you to avoid eating carbohydrates (including fruit) in your first meal. See:

If you binge-feast after several days of fasting, you can get refeeding syndrome, which can be fatal or serious.

Stoozie, I usually make a small omelette with cheese. It satisfies me without inducing cravings. It's also quick to make when hungry.
