“Armchair Exercises”

Sorry, I think I should have classed myself as “disabled” on the application form as I cannot stand without support or walk unaided. I am finding it very difficult to start even the “easy” exercise programme.

I suffer from arthritis, scoliosis and spinal stenosis.

Is there an exercise programme that I can follow from a chair? One that will suit me better!

Hi ExSaltLover welcome to EXI, I'm sorry that there aren't many chair based exercises for you on the app, but you're welcome to log any activity you do as "Other Activity". I'll check in with our clinical team for some suggestions on resources for you to get you started.

I also have arthritis (both osteo and rheumathoid) and spinal stenosis. I have found many sites on line, using the term "Chair Yoga". One that I particularly like and use often are those put out by Sherry Zak Morris.

Once you find one you can use, the side bar provides many other suggestions which may be helpful to you.

Good Luck!

Hi ExSaltLover ,

well done for starting your physical activity journey with EXI. As lowraind suggested there are some good online sources for chair-based exercises, but I understand that it can be difficult to know which ones are suitable. Here are some links to some YouTube channels that we have reviewed which can hopefully get you started. Although some might be aimed mostly at wheelchair users or seniors, they will be suitable for anyone who finds it difficult to do standing exercises. If the workouts are too long, just do the amount of time recommended in your prescription and then skip to the cooldown at the end:

I hope some of these work for you. Do let us know how you get on and if you find some really great content you want to share with the community.
