Hi 👋, thank you for adding me to this community 😊, I’m Sue, aged 58 - I think !! I have fibromyalgia and very obese, I really need to improve my health and fitness and lose weight in the process. I have also struggled with sciatica which has caused nerve damage and calf tightness in my left leg making it difficult with stairs and hills. I work 8 till 5/6ish .

Just wondering how you build excerise into your daily routine? I have tried before going to work but I am not a great morning person and also soon as I leave work or get home, but sometimes I don’t have the energy as so tired, I’d love to find out how you build it into your days, thank you 😊

Hi Sue. Very well done on getting started! It can be challenging to build exercise in to your day, especially when you have pain and fatigue with the fibromyalgia and sciatica which can be unpredictable.

The real key here is to spend the first few weeks doing a small amount that is going to be manageable. It’s a classic mistake to get very motivated at the start of a programme, push too hard and then have a flare up of pain or fatigue and lose interest. The good news is that if you get over the first 2-3 weeks, your body starts to get used to it, you build a routine and you can then push on. EXi will guide you. Also, some pain is fine as it just your body working the right parts and doesn’t mean you are causing damage. However as general rule, if the increase in pain or fatigue lasts until the day after exercise, then it was a bit too much.

As to building it in to your day, just my opinion, but having a regular walk booked in is very helpful as it can be done anywhere. It will only be 10-15 at low intensity initially. At the start, lunch can be good as fibromyalgia isn’t great first thing in the morning or late in the evening. Then have one or two days a week with something a bit different, e.g. a video or light gym session can keep motivation. Don’t be afraid to play around and see what works for you. There are often a few false starts naturally, but you’ll get there.

Thank you lewis that’s really helpful 😊 I will look at my week to see where I can fit in a walk etc , My plan is to go to gym straight after work 3 times a week, and see how that goes, Tracy my PT is amazing so looking forward to seeing her to work out my plan , it’s hard when it does not come naturally and feels a huge effort, I’ve done it before lockdown so just need to do it again. Have a lovely weekend 😊
