Nearly 7 year old, had bowel issues since toilet training

My daughter was great at meeting all her milestones except for toilet training. She didn't care if she had a dirty nappy, she wasn't interested in using a toilet.

When she was 4 nursery urged us to try toilet training her. It didn't go well and we've had bowel issues since then. One thing that I really struggle with though, is that she doesn't care about poo, she has no disgust factor and will happily stay in dirty poopy knickers at school all day even though she's nearly 7. Anyone else's child like this or have any input?

Covid slowed down our referral to the constipation clinic at our local hospital and we didn't get an appointment until August last year but we didn't need it at the time because things were going well, she was going regularly and had come off the meds but things went downhill again when she returned to school.

She isn't able to drink much at school and she avoids going to the toilet so it really makes things tough. She's been back on the meds (stool softener and laxative) for 2 weeks now and we've still only got constant leakage and small sized poos at the moment.

I'm so fed up of the constant smell of her poo, even when she's clean the smell is stuck in her hair and the constant soaking and rinsing and washing of soiled knickers and clothes!

Sounds like you need to disimpact her, once completed keep her on a maintenance dose, don't be in a rush to get her off the medication, she needs to be on it. Encourage regular toilet sits after every meal too, they will help.

If you get her to wash her own dirty knickers maybe she'll smell them.
