My daughter has been struggling for the past 2 years with severe constipation so bad she doesn’t know when she needs the toilet because of the overflow problem, which is embarrassing for her in school I’m worried she is going to be bullied. The GP prescribes laxido which she takes but only seems to work every so many weeks even when the dosage is used, then we are back to square one. I’m at my wits ends the GP is refusing to refer her to see someone else, which I think she needs as there is clearly more going on than just Chronic Constipation. Would anyone recommend taking her to A&E or will I be turned away. She is so afraid to go to the toilet because it hurts her so much it’s heartbreaking to see her like this all the time. The school is useless they say they will help but they don’t, she’s left sat in her soiled clothes all day, which is highly embarrassing for her now she is getting older. Please if anyone can offer any advice I will be forever grateful.

It sounds like you need to disimpact her. I would suggest having a look on the eric website for further guidance on how to do this.

Your poor daughter, that’s horrible for her and sounds like you are not getting much help from your GP!! I would ask to speak to a different doctor and request a referral to see a Gastroenterologists as there might be something else going on. If they won’t do a referral contact your local NHS continence service (google for your local area), they should be more helpful.

If you haven’t seen it yet, there is a video called The Pooh Nurses which explain it really well - it’s good for both you and you daughter to watch together.

My daughter also was told she had chronic constipation, but after two years of her suffering with pain, recital bleeding, trying every type of medicines including disimpaction and suppositories, I lost my patience and requested a referral as I was adamant something else was going on (although GP insisted it was still constipation)! We finally saw a Gastroenterologists, who did a full blood screening and from that discovered she has Coeliac Disease! If I didn’t keep pushing my daughter would still be very ill and in a lot of pain. I’m not saying that is what your daughter has, but GPs are too quick to diagnose constipation, and in my experience not very helpful!

I really hope you get the help your daughter needs.

Thank you so much for your reply this has really helped me, I have a face to face appointment with the GP on Monday and I will push for this. I know something more underlying is happening, for this to become a returning issue constantly.

I am going through exactly the same thing, my daughter is 5, but has exactly the same experiences school wise and home. She has just had a blood test done so waiting results. The dr wanted to rule out anything underlying. She uses movical. Hasnt made any impact this week. I chatted to health visitor, then nursery nurse, who said see dr as it's been going on too long - 2 yrs plus.

Haave you tried a toilet toy to help relax her. She have anxiety and be so stressed its keeping her from going, plus she can feel when your axsiouse too. My daughter has a fidget toy and i get her to sing her favourite song to help relax her as she won't sit long enough than a wee. So we'v been trying relaxing techniques as she could also be on the autism spectrum. So moods and axiety don't help. Plenty fluids and exercise can help too.
