Year 6 : Hi everyone, how common is wetting and soiling... - ERIC
Year 6

Extremely common, more than you will realise. What are currently doing to help?
The reason why I am asking is my brother is in this year group and having accidents frequently. I just wanted to know if it was common, I am surprised it is though
There are many reasons why it might be happening and getting to the route cause is important.
I suspect maybe it’s because he has a water bottle, which the school encourages students to drink, but they also are very strict on toilet visits in lessons, that’s my guess. If anyone has experience of this please give me a reply
Soiling will be due to backed up stools which in turn will put pressure on the bladder hence the accidents. He needs to be disimpacted and kept on a regime of laxative
Yes, have son in Y6 and he has accidents. Can school be told discretely that your brother needs to be able to go as he needs to?
I have been told that toilet breaks are only allowed at break and lunch times only, apparently they have a very strict policy on that. I think it’s very unfair indeed. The wet pants are not full blown, thankfully but I do worry that one day that could happen and the embarrassment will be hard to live down
Ask GP to write to school and refer to urology dept at hospital to find out why. School nurse also and SENCO may hold some sway over toilet breaks. They can't refuse a child with a genuine health need. Shouldn't stop anyone really, I think its not on.
It’s wrong for sure. Nobody can say for sure when they will need the toilet. I know my self you might not need to go, then suddenly get a urge later on. I think it’s a problem in most schools up and down the country.
Certainly. I bet there are a lot of people in classrooms who struggle with this. I think it infringes human rights personally, though I can see the problem teachers have with policing kids who would take advantage and just mess about and pretend. There must be a better way than a blanket ban though? Seems crackers.
