Overactive bladders and drinks

Hi - I’ve been on a mission recently to get my 4 year old daughter drinking more and to try and work out whether some drinks trigger accidents more than others. It’s been a slow process of getting her to have drinks at set times, just a little one to begin with and gradually increasing the amount. I literally started with a 20ml drink and got her to tick it off on a chart of drink times when she had it. We’re now managing 1000-1500ml a day and the difference has been amazing. Not perfect, but it has really helped reduce accidents.

We also cut all juices and squashes so it’s just water and milk and have seen a massive improvement. Interestingly now she is just on water and milk I have discovered that orange squash makes her have an accident (something I had never spotted before, but had spotted the link with blackcurrant). I’ve also noticed that apple juice made from concentrate sets her off, but not the pure juice. No idea why but there must be something in the process that includes a bladder irritant.

Anyway, I thought it was worth sharing in case of interest or worth others who are dealing with this trying too.

Hello,

We’ve noticed the same. We avoid all citric drinks and berry drinks with our son, (now 7) but apple squash and juice does seem ok. Hot chocolate is a massive no too!

Our son drinks only water, milk and apple now. His new favourite drink is apple squash and fizzy water. It’s great and means he can have ‘party drinks’ like the other children. It’s become a bit of a revelation and we all like it now!
