Nine year old still wet.

Thank you so much to everyone who replied to my post. Your advice and suggestions were really helpful. When he got home from school this afternoon, we had a long (and tearful) talk. He says that he definitely wants to go on his school trip. He has agreed to let me tell His teacher, which I am going to do tomorrow, before he changes his mind!! Unfortunately, the Drynites just aren't absorbent enough for him, so he uses an incontinence pad, which is like a large nappy. Over the next few weeks he's going to practise putting it on as discretely as he can, under the bed clothes when he goes to bed, and take it off again before he gets up. If he leaves his wet pad in his sleeping bag in the mornings. I'll ask his teacher whether she could get rid of his wet pad and replace it with a fresh one, ready for the next night. I'll also get him some really baggy pyjamas, just in case he needs to get up in the night. Does that sound like a plan?I. I know that whilst he's away, I'll be a nervous wreck!! Thank you everyone. Any further advice would be very welcome.

Ah, I'm glad he isn't going to miss his trip, and that he has agreed to involve the teacher. Sounds like a good plan to me - good luck xx

Good luck. I have a 9 yo too and I know how difficult it can be for them. Hope it goes well with his teacher

Well done both of you. So glad he's decided to go. Only other thought I had was whether there was a really close friend that he could confide in beforehand and so could be there with him, maybe helping him get message to the teacher if there was a problem but just to be someone else on "his side" to give him a bit more confidence.

I have girls, so I know they are a different species at times, but since my daughter (who has an overactive bladder so day as well as night issues) has been open with close friends, they've been fantastic and we also found a few who were still having night time issues too which made her feel less of the odd one out. Maybe a step too far but might be worth sewing the seed with your son just in case there is someone he felt he could talk to.

Let us know how the trip goes, I'm sure he'll have a great time - and try not to worry too much!

xx

My son who suffers day & night wetting and soiling managed a three day trip with careful planning.

He had two suitcases with double of everything and one with pull ups - nobody noticed as I gave the other one to the teacher assisting. He changed and used the teacher bathroom which was next to where they were sleeping - again he was told by teacher so no other children questioned and accessed his other suitcase of pull ups and spare clothes. It had a black sack for used clothes and another for pull ups.

The teacher carried spare clothes etc and discreetly pulled him out to change if necessary.

We bought pyjamas that were long t shirt and baggy shorts style - after much investigation I found at the time river island had the best ones - thicker material and darker with so you couldn’t tell if wearing pull ups and if was a leak didn’t obviously show up on the material .they were much more expensive than say Asda but they were amazing as you couldn’t tell at all.

I had 3 sleepless nights but as it turned out not a single child suspected a thing and one of his cool room mates unexpectedly wet the bed ....

planning and discretion from the school most helpful - good luck !!! I have another trip this year so won’t have any fingers nails again.
