Can I train to be a paramedic if I have epilepsy?

I am in my last year at uni and don’t really know what I want to do when I leave (I’m studying ecology and environmental science). I am really interested in becoming a paramedic but I have epilepsy. I’ve had epilepsy since 2012. I’ve had 5 seizures the last one was over 3 years ago (I have tonic clonic seizures that last 5+mins, I also have photosensitive epilepsy but they’ve never been triggered by ambulance lights). I am worried about the fact that I don’t drive and don’t have a license at all and it will jeopardise my chances. Does anyone know or able to help me?

Hi PaurusMajor

Thank you for your post.

Here is a link to the NHS webpage that has some frequently asked questions about careers in the ambulance service team.

The ambulance service has various roles. Some you will need a driving licence for but not all.

With the various job roles that may include driving, some but not all job roles will require a category C licence.

As you are three years seizure free you can obtain a general car licence but not the category C licence.

If you haven’t already, you may wish to have a look at the NHS webpage for people looking for a career.

Good luck
