Seizures and hypothyroidism

So ive started having new seizures, I have non epileptic seizures, but for the last few months ive started having new seizures, my left side of my head gets a sharp pain, I have twitching in my right hand and I glaze over for around 30 seconds to a minute. Ive also been diagnosed with hypothyroidism so I wonder if there is a correlation of having both? They are getting me a head scan and to see neurology, but I was wondering does this sound like it could be epilepsy, im 23 years old and very confused and alone :(

Dear Ella95

Firstly, I apologise for the delay in replying to you. I had to research your question regarding hypothyroidism.

Generally, there is no connection between thyroid disease and epilepsy. There is one research paper that seems to suggests there may be a link between thyroid function and epilepsy. The results are not conclusive and currently there is uncertainty to the fact that a healthy thyroid function may help ease epileptic activity. It would be best to discuss this with your neurologist and the doctor caring for your hypothyroidism.

As trained epilepsy advisers, we can give general information on epilepsy. But we’re not able to diagnose your symptoms. If your symptoms are related to epilepsy, it could be some type of focal seizure. In these seizures the epileptic activity starts in just a part of your brain. You may remain alert during this type of seizure, or you may not be aware of what is happening around you. You may have movements that you can’t control, or unusual sensations or feelings. Sometimes, onlookers may not be aware that you are having a seizure.

Focal seizures can be very brief or last for minutes.

A number of medical conditions can cause symptoms similar to epilepsy. So I hope you will get a definite diagnosis when you see the neurologist.
