Could not getting enough sleep and stress be a factor in my daughters epilepsy?

My daughter gets "jerks" occasionally in the morning when just up. I witnessed them for the first time the other morning when she had had about 3 hrs sleep.. Excited about school trip that day. She started getting them last year during 5th year exams.

Hi Marytait

Thanks for your post. Not getting enough sleep and stress are two of the most common things that people with epilepsy find trigger their seizures. It sounds like they may be for your daughter as well. To learn more please visit our webpage about common seizure triggers: epilepsy.org.uk/info/triggers

Definately and i find overhearing brings on seizures aswell. Dont know if you have noticed this.

Hi Marytait, sorry to hear the news of your daughter experiencing epilepsy/seizures. Yes, lack of sleep and stress are the two most common triggers for seizures... hormones can also play a part perhaps when she is a little older. I have had epilepsy for 40 years and find lack of sleep and stress are the worst triggers for me. Feel free to visit my page on Facebook: facebook.com/EpilepsyMotive...!

Yes , poor quality sleep or bad sleeping patterns affect people's seizure threshold.

Thanks everyone for your comments. It's been an emotional few months with my daughter but she is now on Keppra 1000mgs and has not had any seizures so far. Coming to terms with it has been the hardest thing especially at her age and when all her friends are now learning to drive.. Fingers crossed she stays free and can carry on with her life.
