Yes! That's a good way to describe it! I used to have that sort of thing when a teenager, and on sodium valproate/epilim. It was in my cheek, and down into my throat - I always felt as if I wanted to cough it up, but nothing ever came up! Now that you mention it as a metallic taste - yes! That's what it was like (except I've never tasted metal before!) And I used to have tingling fingers as well, and on stronger seizures they went numb! And it was in my right side. Are you aware of it all happening or do you lose awareness?

My GP referred me to the Neurologist because my seizures became intractable (3-4 daily) in June 2013. A second visit in July concurred with the first Neurologist that my seizures and further symptoms of Paraesthesia and numbness of the extremities were, in their opinion, a long term side effect of Phenytoin use.

I, like many others patients, know their body better than anyone else, believed that 45 years of Phenytoin was ambiguous. I asked my GP for a "Candida" test to rule out a gut infection to which he replied "Men don't get Candida"?

Left with no option I sought a private Comprehensive Parasitology Test which proved positive for H-Pylori. I was wrong with Candida, but H-Pylori is still an insidious gut infection.

To keep my NHS records accurate I informed my GP of the result, to which he offered a triple therapy course of antibiotics. I declined as I believed it was a previous 7 days course of Amoxicillin 500 mg that was responsible for disturbing my gut-flora in the beginning. I'm open to other's opinions but once I began using Probiotics, Betaine Hcl and Caprylic Acid my symptoms started to subside.

Certain medicines that alter bacterial growth or prevent the small intestine from properly absorbing vitamin B12 include antibiotics and certain diabetes and seizure medicines. nhlbi.nih.gov/health//dci/D...

I must add that after requesting my blood test results, that I was told were OK, my serum B12 was only 348 ng/L (range 189-889) and Ferritin was 55 ng/L (range 22-275) I self medicated to raise the iron levels.

After 7 weeks numbness and tingling had completely resolved itself.

It is now proving that internet forums can help patients help one another and eventually lead to groups campaigning for medical guidelines to be reviewed. I would commit myself to suggesting that some Medicine needs rewriting and definitely holistic treatment needs reincorporating alongside clinical care.

I was relieved to receive a recent letter of discharge, for apparently missing a Neurologist's appointment, that I thought my GP had cancelled upon me informing him of my progress of eliminating the tingling and numbness. To emphasise my relief, was because the Neurologists had only been concentrating on preparing me, with MRI, CT scans and Telemetry tests for a Temporal Lobectomy.

In my research I learned from Dr David Tanton that nobody is drug deficient. I have had 45 years of anticonvulsant therapy and not once has a Doctor, nor a Consultant ever advised, or informed me that AED's deplete our bodies of minerals and vitamins.

My vertebrae were crumbling and an NHS Rheumatologist only offered me NSAID relief for pain, for which I declined. I sought a Chiropractor who diagnosed Degenerative Disc Dis-ease (Osteoarthritis) and after 14 months of dietary advice with Vitamins & Minerals supplements and spinal manipulations I had rebuilt 2 mm of new bone growth. Pain was kept at bay with Magnesium Citrate.

The metallic taste I experienced was similar to sour milk.

I have no medical background, but am just a bloody good carpenter, who’ll just be happier if my experience from the University of Life can help someone else. My seizures have reduced from 3-4 daily to just 3 in 7 months.

Authoritative references to B12 deficiency is Sally Pacholok's "Could it B vitamin B12?" westonaprice.org/book-revie...

and Mrs Andrea MacArthur's petition Calling on the Scottish Parliament to urge the Scottish Government to review and

overhaul the current out-dated and ineffective method of diagnosing and treating Pernicious Anaemia/VitaminB12 Deficiency. scottish.parliament.uk/Gett...

Overall, I would prefer mainstream medicine to reintegrate holistic medicine treating us, once again, with dietary advice. We are all unique individuals with sometimes a different biological chemistry to each other.

Sorry again for my lengthy reply but if you read the enclosed links your eyes will open wide to a wealth of enlightening information that we've not been told about.

Kind regards, Will

Thank you so much everyone for all you input here. I have only just picked up on this email (4pm, Mon 7/7/14) as I cannot sometimes spend long on the pc, due to the effect on my eyes epilepsy and past medication side-effect has left me with. I get this numbness in my right hand (I am left-handed and I wondered if that was significant!!). Often this happens whilst in bed. It's completely different to "pins and needles" i.e. lack of circulation). I also get a mild tingling all over my body sometimes, only during the night. I am sorry if anybody finds this embarrassing, reading this from a woman but I always attribute new feelings of a mental/thought process/physical nature to my meds as I'm on such a cocktail at present that seem to control my temporal lobe epilepsy fairly well, the last thing I want to do is start changes again. Perhaps it is time to see my GP though. willyoung, your content was very helpful - along with everyone else's - as usual. I wish I'd come here and spoken out sooner about it instead of keeping it to myself as usual! :-)
