Moving and Caring

Life for me is very difficult at the moment and will be some time. My epilepsy is well controlled, but because of my age (83) the pills are overcoming me and making me feel very tired and listless.

Also, my wife is in a care home and I visit her twice a week for two hours each time. I am presently living in a house that's a bit too big and difficult for me. I now suffer from arthritis and the stair is becoming more and more difficult. I shop in Dundee twice a week- that also takes up time.

I'm moving to another house in the near future. That alone causes a lot of stress, visiting banks and lawyers etc.

All the above, plus having to cope with going to a funeral, going to xmas lunches and generally coping with xmas on the top of everything has made me very sleepless indeed.

How do I get help to cope with all that?

Hi

If you’ve not had one already, request a social care assessment (you can self refer, a family member can ,ask your GP or specialist to refer….). Possibly the staff at your wife’s care home could too . I’d suggest self referral would be easiest since you’re online and as far as I know it’s a very simple process .

It’s usually very quick between the referral being made & the assessment happening. It’s usually done by social work staff . They can talk with you about what extra needs you have , what you’re struggling with and ways to manage those.

Since you’re in Scotland you’ll have a free bus pass already but other practical things that can help would be available.
