Questions about recovery from laparoscopy

Hello.

I had a diagnostic laparoscopy for endometriosis done a little over a week ago. They also removed a vaginal cyst.

I still have quite significant pain at the sites of the incisions. There's a pulling pain from the belly button and down that gets worse with positional changes. I feel a similar pain at times from the incision that's below the belly button. There's also sharp spontanous pain.

I also have a lot of swelling in my abdomen. I look like I'm in early-middle stages of pregnancy.

I've also had some numbness, like my left labia fell asleep 5 times or more per day at random times the days after the surgery (not just when seated etc), but that's better now actually.

I have three incisions.

I've had regular BM's and am passing gas (sorry if this is too much info). My mom thought the gas they put in should have been gone by now.

Has anyone else experienced something similar to this?

Should I be worried about this being symptoms of a complication?

The hospital only spoke about pain for a few days... The swelling is also quite uncomfortable.

Is there anything that can be done to help the swelling go down?

What were you told about activity restrictions after surgery?

I was given a little unspecific information. The leaflet says to restrict hard activities that involve pelvic floor and abdominal muscles. I'm really not entirely sure what they mean by that. Another leaflet I found online about activities after vaginal procedures also says avoid heavy household chores like vcuuming and cleaning floors as well as no lifting over 5 kg, avoid constipation and straining on the toilet, sex and heavy exercise.

Has anyone had a complication from laparoscopy? How did you know? I know that there are many different type of complications which I assume will have different symptoms.

Hi Indigopost

I have had 3 lapaorscopic surgeries for endometriosis. Pain at incisions is normal and the wounds do take some time to heal. The belly button wound takes the longest and I found it to be the most uncomfortable one. A bit of swelling in the lower abdomen is also normal. For two of my surgeries, I was able to get up and walk around the next day. Ofcourse it was hurting but it was bearable. But after my 2nd surgery, I had very bad gas pain for 3 whole days. I couldnt lie down, I couldnt sit, I couldn't walk. I felt terrible. The hospital gave me some medication to help with the gas but overall I took like a week to be a bit better. I think recovery time is directly proportional to the extent of procedure. I mean if during your surgery they removed adhesions and scar tissue as well, it will take a bit longer to heal. However the wounds and swelling should be better in a weeks time if healing naturally and normally.

When they ask you to limit activity, it means all of the above that you have mentioned including and not limited to running, swimming, exercise, lifting weights, sex etc. But do try to move around, a light 5 to 10 min walk or as much as you can manage otherwise wounds become stiff. Listen to your body. If you think something is not right, then maybe its not. I would suggest you consult with your doctor.

Hope you feel better soon! ♡

Hi there,

I think everyone is different so don’t compare yourself to others! I felt absolutely awful for 2 weeks and could barely get off the sofa. I felt like I was being really dramatic so tried to force myself to do things and ‘get over it’ but ended up almost passing out from doing the dishes! It took me about a month to start feeling normal again so don’t worry if it’s taking time. Be kind to yourself!
