Having had Covid whilst in hospital I'm interested in Long Covid and how its symptoms mirror those of Enc. Plus any findings on vax side effects. Some of you may share my curiosity so here is a link to a recent study:
Because I’m a bit later replying, it’s now pouring here but the rain sounds cosy on the porch roof! I’m also interested as I believe Encephalitis Society were asked to be involved in long covid studies. I had it end 2020 (spent a happy new year in hospital) and whilst I’ve mostly made a full recovery I know my breathing was affected for a long time and occasionally if I’m really tired it is even now.
Hi Gandalf. I had long COVID in 2020, before the vaccinations . In the fifth month I started having multiple seizures and ended up in hospital for 3 weeks, unable to speak or write . Drs thought I had encephalitis again and prescribed me Acyclovir, but tests showed I didn’t have encephalitis. Instead it appeared that COVID had inflamed the part of my brain damaged by encephalitis in 2013 . I had a miracle happy ending, as I suddenly was able to speak lucidly with normal (for me) memory levels again at the end of the third week . My husband had thought we were going to have endure the long recovery journey again, so I think he’s never been so relieved to hear my voice . 😊 I’ve had the COVID vaccinations since then, and thankfully the COVID I’ve caught since then has been really mild.
I’m very lucky that having had Covid twice it’s never done me any damage although it did delay me finally leaving hospital with encephalitis after nearly four months.
I really recommend Michael Rosen (the poet) and his book called Getting Better. It’s about his life and perspectives on his recovery from a traumatic bout of Covid and, while obviously not about encephalitis, I have found many parallels between his thoughts on the long road of ‘recovery’ and ours – the writing is more about his thoughts of illness and recovery than Covid itself. Others here might find it interesting and reassuring to read.
