Hi,

27 yo and new UPJ obstruction found in ER while traveling. Found MD in Chicago who is highly recommended on ratings sites but turns out to be oncologist urologist. He referred me to a new grad surgeon. Anyone have any idea how to find an experienced UPJ MD?

I suggest that you do an internet search for urological surgeons in Chicago. There should be a number of them. Then make some phone calls, asking them for surgeon who specializes in upj obstruction surgery (pyeloplasty). You might start with calling a pediatric urological surgeon since they are the ones who do this surgery the most.

ThAnk you! I have been searching and found a pediatric that is very experienced. Do pediatric also operate on adults?

It just depends on the pediatric surgeon's particular situation. You should definitely call this pediatric surgeon's office and inquire. If this surgeon does not operate on adults he/she could certainly suggest an adult surgeon who is proficient in the procedure you need.

I went with the urologist in my medical group. The one who diagnosed me (finally!) and ran tests. I had an HMO then, it was 1989. Is it different now? I have a PPO now and have an idea it’d be much the same, in Oregon, USA. I’m really hoping you find someone thats works for you :-)

Hello,

Thank you for your response. Since you had a UPJ obstruction it sounds like it was completely obstructed? I think they performed a nephrectomy for you. I am looking to find information on opening up the obstruction in my case.

It seems you are still functioning with one kidney. I appreciate your time to respond. Thank you
