I’ve been feeling sick for a while now. Lots going on. Last week they did an ultrasound and found a 6cm cyst on my kidney blocking the tube out. I’ve had horrendous swelling of ankles and legs for a long time now and really bad pain of the legs and it’s gett worse. Could it b linked. The doc is sending me to a urologist. Should this cyst be removed? It’s grown 2cm since last scan. Thanks xxxx

Good evening Emma, we are sorry you have been experiencing so much pain from the cyst. The best people to advise you regarding the leg pain would be your Consultant and health professional as they know your medical history. However swelling of the legs and ankles is called oedema and is a symptom of kidney disease. Perhaps when you next see the Consultant or your GP you might consider taking a list of questions that you would like answered and asking someone to go with you. That can increase the likely hood of remembering all the answers too. There are steps that you can discuss with your Doctor to help relieve the symptoms and help towards stopping it become worse. I have added below the website for you and hope it helps towards relieving your anxiety a little in the mean time.
Come on folks any words of encouragement for Emma please?
Thanks so much. I really appreciate your input. There’s so much going on with me and sometimes doctors can be dismissive because they are over worked or don’t want to be dealing with it.
I have polycystic kidneys, which I've had all my life. (now 58) I have many cysts in my kidneys now.
Sometimes individual cysts can become a problem but your consultant will be able to offer you individual advice.
I had one that burst but my kidneys were in such bad shape anyway that they decided to remove it and its made a positive difference to me.
As you say yours may be in a position that restricts the full function of your kidney, if your urologist decides to address this, it could really help you.
Do go to your appointment with a set of questions; you have every right to ask about your health and your consultant should make time for that.
