People drink because of the effect produced by alcohol. And sorry to say this some of us might have crossed that line where we had choice and control over alcohol. The book Alcoholics Anonymous suggest 2 tests one to determine if you have a physical craving. Try to drink consistent amount of alcohol over a period of time. The second to test the mind. Try to stay stopped for a year or so, but you have to be observe how you mind acts during the phase. Are you at peace when abstaining? Most of the problem drinkers will fail both the tests.
