Hi my wife and I are moving back to the uk in February after a long spell working abroad, what is the process for my wife to get dialysis with the NHS ....do I need to contact our GP and then get a referral....? We don’t know how the procedure works or does this even exist on the NHS ....any help would be much appreciated

Hi Kevlar,

Normal process is to get a referral from your GP to your local dialysis centre.

In the uk you can request to have your dialysis at a particular centre. I guess distance from where you will be living will determine that,

Philip

Your wife cannot obviously afford to miss a session so the process needs to be carefully thought through. Your present dialysis centre should get in touch with your local renal centre at whatever hospital that is located in your area. Consultant to consultant would be best to arrange care and pass on medical information and dialysis procedures. This is what I would do plus letting GP know what is happening.
