Is there any chances of improvement in the kidney function after dialysis?

Hi,

My mother is 56 years old and recently the doctors here in Manipur (remote state in India) have told us that one of the kidneys has been swollen and is not functioning at all, however the other kidney is functioning but not to the best level and it is not able to support the whole body function. The creatinine level is 9.1-9.8 in the recent KFT test. With the doctors advice we have started the dialysis and have already completed two dialysis in the last 3 weeks.

My questions are -

1. Is there any chances of improving the kidney function and stop doing dialysis?

2. What is the life expectancy of a patient with dialysis?

3. Which type of dialysis is more convenient or better, Hemodialysis or PD?

Hi

I've looked at your three questions and the only way to answer them is "who knows".

1. There is a possibility of some improvement but not enough to stop dialysis

2. It depends on the under lying problem/illness but I've known folk who have lived reasonably comfortably for 10-15 years or even more.

3. This is a difficult one to answer but I suggest you talk to her doctors as it will depend very much on her general health situation and her lifestyle.

I guess this hasn't helped but I just want to say that dialysis is not the end of life and as scary as it seems for your mother and you, all of you can live through this part of your mother's life.
