Yes stress and illness can cause higher blood sugars.
Physical/emotional stress generates stress hormones which trigger the release of glucose stored in various organs leading to elevated blood sugar. This is a protection mechanism. For healthy persons ( non-diabetics), any increase in the blood sugar due to physical/emotional stress is well taken care of as they can make sufficient insulin to transport glucose from blood to various cells and any excess is stored as fat. In case of diabetics, the blood sugar rises under stress because of either insufficient insulin or high insulin resistance or both.
Stress absolutely raises Blood sugar levels.
