According to the World Health Organization, between 10 and 19 years old, the human being enters the period of adolescence with puberty as an initial stage, being the preparation for the adult stage. During this period, men and women manifest physical, psychological, emotional and social changes; presenting greater concern for their physical appearance. Oral health is not indifferent to this phase of life, where young people usually start their treatments to improve their smile and health. Know the changes that are presented in your mouth, the practices that are performed and some important points that will help keep your mouths healthy.

In the stage of adolescence, the main habits related to oral health are established since at this time the main dental-maxillary variations occur; and their concern for providing a good physical image to their peers increases. This period is one of the fundamental for the realization of oral treatments like orthodontics that help to improve the bite and the posture of the teeth, contributing in the same way to the perfection of the facial esthetics.

Some events typical of teenage rebellion, such as the initiation of some unhealthy habits such as smoking, drinking alcohol, abuse of treats, and lack of routine dental cleaning, in addition to tongue and lip piercings, can affect the development of the denture generating bad postures and damaging the dental enamel.

During this period, the dentition ends and it is frequent to see adolescents using dental appliances such as orthodontics.Orthodontics makes teeth cleaning a little difficult and can cause food and dental plaque to accumulate; therefore, it is important to instill in the patient a rigorous cleaning routine to eliminate the food deposits formed between the teeth.
