Hello - I'm new to this group and looking for some advice please.
I've recently started wearing a lower partial front denture but am having awful problems finding a way of keeping it secure - especially when eating. Any ideas?
Apologies if this post is in the wrong group.

Hi janey I've had partial denture since march this year having horrendous job keeping it in, but mines upper middle my gums are not swollen now and haven't been for months mine keep falling out so when I'm at home I can't wear it but when go out have to put denture fix ident on or or if not have to keep pressing it into the roof of my mouth I got go wait another 5 weeks before I can have bridge fitted
Hi Pussycat432. I've tried loads of different fixatives but nothing seems to keep the plate still and sometimes the fixative comes off completely - it's a pain. I think I may have to look for an alternative soon. I hate not wearing it but I'm the same and don't wear it at home although there's no way I'd go out without it!!
I think as far as I could grasp my dentist saying I have to have another impression taken two weeks later the new denture arrives n it's fitted between the remaining front teeth
Firstly the partial denture. Is it plastic or a metal (cobalt chrome) denture? How many teeth is it replacing and what natural teeth do you have left. As one top prosthetic consultant once said ‘We are in the business of trying to fit something that stays in to nothing to hang it on!’ So the problem is trying to get enough support and retention to a denture to stop it moving around under the extreme forces of the mouth trying to break and dislodge this foreign object that’s there 🙄. If you have natural teeth, are there any clasps (wires) around them which will help retain it? Of course the other factor governing what sort of denture you have is cost! I don’t know if you are in the UK? If so, and the denture has been made on the good old NHS, this will be a factor in what sort of denture you get I’m sorry to say. All I can say is that if you are not happy with it go back and tell your dentist. If they can’t sort it change dentists.
As for the difference between a denture and a bridge. A bridge is a fixed appliance, like a crown (cap?) so the natural teeth are trimmed down then porcelain bonded to metal are cemented to them with a ‘false’ tooth, or teeth spanning the missing gaps.
My denture is plastic, has 4 teeth on and has metal retaining wires each side, it is NHS. I have 4 teeth left each side. If I have to look privately I will - have to start saving though!!
I'm having problems with my partial denture too 😕. Mine is very hard plastic/acrylic and is at top, consists of one front tooth and a couple back teeth either side . Had it fitted 3 weeks ago and I really cannot get used to it ! Essentially it feels like I have a plastic toy in my mouth. It rocks and clicks and makes my gums sore ! The piece of plastic gum above the front tooth does not sit flat and is very noticeable. I take them
Out to eat and drink as food and liquid go underneath the plate, and I can't talk properly . I hate them 🙈. What other options are there either NHS or private .
Hi. I’m off to see my dentist on Tuesday. I have a part on my plate that sticks out and other parts just don’t sit snug so I also have food and drink getting underneath it. I use a fixative but it never seems to stay on! Also, I have sore areas too and have to remove it to eat, which seems to defeat the object. I hate having them out but hate having them in!!
will be looking elsewhere if I don’t get much help!!
Well saw my dentist yesterday and she has filed some of the denture down but it's still really uncomfortable 😕. She has suggested leaving until February to see if it settles down and if not to maybe try the wires instead of this . So will c how things go . Other options are flexible denture or implants but both would be private and because I have several teeth that will eventually come out due to bone loss that will be huge initial cost and also ongoing costs each time I have one removed 😕 x she did say one of my problems was dry mouth due to
Other meds I take and this isn't helping . Suggests I go to gp as you can get a false saluva🙈😉x This denture is still rocking in my
I went to see my dentist on Tuesday and he said the denture needs to be sent away as it needs to be re-aligned due to gum shrinkage. Obviously I don’t want to have a big gap for a period of time so I’ll have to purchase another denture and then send this one away!!! I asked if there is a better option of material and was told that there is but it’s around £700; evidently it’s like having a Rolls Royce instead of a mini!.
