My brother had DBS surgery on the left side of his brain recently. So far he has had good results but he would like to eventually do the right side. He has not had any major negative side effects other than the stress of going through the surgery itself and getting used to having the "hardware" in his body.

I had DBS surgery in 2010. I am better now but the programming of the stimulator took one year.

My neurologist, during my last appointment, gave me a heads-up that I could be a candidate for DBS. Reading about it on the web, it looks and sounds like quite an ordeal. This is pretty vague, but those of you who've had it, was it easier, tougher or about the same as you expected?

I was well prepared for the op by my consultant. I think it sounds more invasive than it really is! I would definitely recommend it. Tony

I've had both sides done about 3 years ago. It stopped the dystonia, which I seem to go to the hospital for at least 3 times a month, but that has been the only good side of the operation. If it has slowed down the PD then I'm really in trouble because nothing else has changed and things seem to be getting worse. Have had PD for about 8 years now when I was 42. But I know my wife and sons are greatful for stopping the dystonia. So am I.

I had both sides done in October of '08 ( I was 58 when had DBS 18 yrs after dx)...took a year to program and achieve max benefits...great benefits now with major reductions in all meds...at least at 50% or lower of previous levels of meds...the only thing without benefit is balance but the bike riding appears to help that. Great book "Life with a battery operated brain" discusses most details.
