I am not telling you it is easy. I'm telling you it is worth it!
I am a faithful member of the RSB Rock Steady Team.. I am working out in my boxing class
3 days a week and living proof that the program works. My ability to play golf all summer is because of my exercise and positive attitude
I took up boxing when I was 50 (now 65) to keep fit. Diagnosed with PD 8 years ago (58 then). Retired from pharmacy at same time. Continued boxing (including sparring) and joined a martial arts academy. Attend the gym 5 times a week for 1-2 hours each time. Am oldest at gym but still keep up with the young guys and gals! Can thoroughly recommend boxing ( but not advocate sparring) to any PD sufferers. I am on madopar and sifrol. No signs of shuffling or freezing. Can still jump about, punch, drive, write, play piano, play bridge (3 times a week minimum). Have my share of "down" days but not severe enough for anti-depressants. Am organizing Parkinson patients to attend special sessions at gym (similar to Rock Steady). Am liasing with a specialist physio who treats various neurological- muscular diseases who will refer PD patients for training. I am in Sydney Australia.physio has good relationships with a number of neurologists who refer patients on diagnosis of PD sometimes before introducing medication! Hoping to start these sessions in late January. Vigorous exercise (not necessarily boxing) is becoming more recognized by neurologists as a method of delaying progression of PD. Give it a go! What have you got to lose?
I couldn't agree more. If boxing training doesn't appeal to someone they should just do something, but few activities would combine all of the benefits that a consistent (non-contact) boxing training program offers. The benefits will help you perform to your potential in your other activities.
Thanks for the testimonial. We are the Rock Steady of Florida at The Winning Round Foundation. The Winning Round Foundation, Inc. AKA The Winning Round is a non profit organization whose mission is to enhance the quality of life for people who have Parkinson's Disease through non-contact boxing based fitness programs. "Every round is a winning round" for our boxers living with Parkinson's Disease and come out of their corners with a will to fight! Our program helps to build power, strength, agility, flexibility, hand-eye coordination, and balance. Our programs have been proven to help lessen the symptoms associated with Parkinson's Disease. Most of all, we hope to help these individuals lead a happier, healthier, and more confident life! Stay ready to Rumble!
It is easier to stay ready that it is to get ready. Some of us old guys that are blessed to be able to work out at a high intensity level need to remember to recover just as 'hard' as we work out.
