Gut neurons may offer way to treat constipation in Parkinson’s

"L-glutamine, an amino acid, plays a crucial role in gut health and may influence the gut-brain axis, potentially impacting nerve function in the gut, by supporting gut barrier integrity, modulating inflammation, and acting as a fuel source for gut cells.
Here's a more detailed explanation of how L-glutamine interacts with the nerves in the gut:
1. Gut-Brain Axis and the Vagus Nerve:
The gut and brain communicate through the gut-brain axis, with the vagus nerve playing a key role in this bidirectional communication.
The enteric nervous system, a network of nerves within the gut, is part of this communication pathway.
Poor gut health can disrupt the balance of neurotransmitters, which can impact brain function and potentially lead to neuropsychiatric conditions.
2. L-Glutamine and Gut Barrier Integrity:
L-glutamine is a primary fuel source for cells lining the gut, supporting their function and integrity.
It helps maintain the integrity of the intestinal barrier, preventing excessive permeability and potential inflammation.
L-glutamine can enhance the expression of tight junction proteins, which help seal the intestinal lining.
3. L-Glutamine and Inflammation:
L-glutamine can modulate inflammatory responses in the gut, potentially reducing inflammation and promoting a healthier gut environment.
It may help prevent bacterial translocation, where bacteria from the gut cross the intestinal barrier, potentially triggering inflammation.
4. L-Glutamine and Gut Microbiome:
L-glutamine can support the gut microbiome by acting as a food source for beneficial bacteria.
A healthy gut microbiome is important for overall health, including gut function and nerve signaling.
5. L-Glutamine and Nerve Function:
While L-glutamine doesn't directly stimulate nerve function, its role in maintaining gut health and reducing inflammation can indirectly support nerve function in the gut.
A healthy gut environment is essential for proper nerve function and communication within the gut-brain axis.
Some research suggests that L-glutamine supplementation may help manage symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), a condition that can affect nerve function in the gut.
6. L-Glutamine Supplementation:
L-glutamine is a conditionally essential amino acid, meaning the body can typically synthesize it, but stress or illness can increase the demand.
Supplementation may be beneficial for individuals with impaired gut health, stress, or certain medical conditions.
However, it's important to consult with a healthcare professional before taking L-glutamine supplements, especially if you have any underlying health conditions. "
As I have anointed myself a healthcare professional and having consulted with myself, I just ordered some L-Glutamine.
Thank you for the post Jean.
"People who have psychiatric disorders, or who have a history of seizures, should use caution when considering supplementation with glutamine. Some researchers feel that taking glutamine may worsen these conditions. Many elderly people have decreased kidney function, and may need to reduce their dose of glutamine."
There are positive things related to the l-glutamine but there appear to be some instances where it would not be okay such as impaired kidney function and having been diagnosed with cancer.

"Glutamine added to classical amino acid nutritional supplementation may contribute to the preservation of the gut by decreasing villus atrophy and maintaining gut function. Glutamine may therefore constitute an essential factor in the well-being and good health of very old individuals"
