Using CBD/THC with PD

Hey all,

I'm concerned with using THC/CBD with my HWP. I read an article that stated that people with PD should avoid both forms and now I'm a bit worried. Of course, I cannot find that darn article now, but I have been giving my husband a 10mg gummy at night (Wana Stay Asleep) for a couple of months now since he tends to get up around 0330 to 0500 in the morning and Lord knows, I can't get up that early (I need to sleep at some point!). I also give him a 10mg slow release melatonin, 4.5 mg of Low Dose Naltrexone and up to 45 mg of Lithium at night.

Most articles I've researched say the CBD is good for PD esp at much higher doses of CBD, CBN, CBG, etc. And I know better than trust one article.... But.....

Anyway, once again, if anyone has insights, I'd sure appreciate it. Not sure any of the night stuff is helping.... he was diagnosed 27 months ago and seems to be deteriorating faster than most based on this forum. I've tried lots of wonderful therapies on him (nothing seems to stick), but am mostly asking about the use of hemp, etc.

Thank you all - I appreciate everyone here so much - makes me feel like I am not alone in this journey.

Is this the article that you can't find?

No, but it was very similar in talking about the cognitive effects of CBD/THC. And yet, I've read that the combo, or CBD alone, is very good for PD. Such a frustrating disease in that it is so... unique to everyone and does not seem like a straight path for many. Any insights Art about dosing him with it at night? I also try, slowly, herbal sleep remedies as well. Its a rare night when he sleeps more than 5 hours. And many times less than that - and he usually refuses to take a proper nap, even when he's exhausted. Than you.

One word yes.

PWP has been on CBD with 0.04% THC (very low) for almost 4 years - started on twice per day 4 drops - these days he has 4-6 drops at night before bed and he gets a good nights sleep and feels great when he gets up in the morning - averages 7-9 hours,

Didn't we just get done reading about one's BS meter?

.

Taking a proper nap might be the ticket, was just told by my own family physician at my annual check that you are fine with getting enough sleep if you manage to get six hours cumulative, that is 6 hours in total or more, rather than trying to get it all at night or all in one go.

I don't recommend medical marijuana any more for sleep, but that's just me. When I tested it, I found it addicting. It worked very well most nights, but I found it was taking more and more to get the same effect. I tested it for many months and at the end of the test when I stopped taking it, I realized that I was craving it every night and mentally making excuses why it wouldn't hurt to take a bit more for a night or two.

I resisted the temptation and it took a few months for the urge to diminish. I don't use it any more.

An important note to consider is that I was taking a high THC (30%) / low CBD product that was recommended to me at the dispensary when I asked for a sleep aid.

Take a look at the post by shaken-not-stirred. They used a very low THC product to good effect in terms of improved sleep. That lower dose of THC had no sleep benefit for me, but it might for your husband and I suspect that it is the THC which has the addictive effects in medical marijuana so getting by with less THC seems like a good thing if it works for your husband.

If that doesn't help, you might consider a multi component sleep aid that has 4 active natural components in one capsule such as this one which is fairly inexpensive to test, which was another issue with medical marijuana, it was expensive at my rate of use for sleep :

Lastly, I wrote this about a possible sleep combination of three supplements (Magnesium/Zinc/Melatonin) that was used to good effect in a study :

Whatever you decide to try, please come back and let us know what helps, as insomnia seems to be quite common in PD which often involves a perturbed circadian rhythm.

I use cannabis for sleep for a long time It's usually the 10 mg or cbd5mg + thc5 mg. When I feel the dose is not enough,, I just do a break for couple of days and then it works again perfectly. Only cbd doesn't work for me, it should be thc also.

I started taking full spectrum CBD about 9 months ago having developed bedtime cramping, pain and insomnia.. I probably take about 50-100mg a night and could now fall asleep standing up! It’s been great for me and getting sleep helps so much with everything else. (I get the impression that CBD products vary greatly in quality and strength and it’s worth getting the good stuff.) That’s only my experience.

I tried some of those gummies and seltzers, while they were legal temporarily in my state which they are no longer allowing more than the tiniest amount... I must be a lightweight because the stuff just made me stupid and very frustrated because I knew it was making me stupid, gave me "brain fog" where you can't hold a thought or a bit of information in your head even when you try. Just knowing you can't is almost worse. Never going back.

Cannabis is legal in my country. I was involved in a PD clinical trial using a combo of CBD/THC oil. I didn't finish the trial because I couldn't tolerate the oil as I titrated up. I, however, stayed on the lower dose for years without complications and it helps my sleep tremendously. I have since moved to a 10/10 (equal parts THC/CBD) and it is more helpful for sleep.

Could those who have had success, share the brand/formula they use? TIA.

CBD always helps me sleep, and I often take it instead of melatonin. , I do get up to pee several times a night, but have no trouble getting back to seep. CBD oil also calms me during the day if I'm having a rough day.

I have taken 40mg of Cannabidiol nightly to help with sleep for almost 2 years. I also take 50mg IR Sinimet and 100mg ER Sinimet. I also wear an Apollo neuro which I believe helps. Touch wood, my tremor has been much easier to control at bedtime and at repeated wakening. Melatonin does not seem to help but I take 2 mg anyway! I usually get more than 7 hrs sleep each night. I have tried THC but it left me zonked. Could probably find a lower dose that works but not keen on anything that potent long term. There are a few scientific papers but nothing impressive and big Pharma is only interested in patentable molecules so this is not likely to improve.

It may be my imagination or a placebo effect, but it seems like when I take glutathione (250mg) before go to bed it helps me sleep. If I really need to sleep i take 10mg of flexeril. That is a Rx drug (muscle relaxer) that I got when I hurt my back, but man I sleep like a baby when I take it at bedtime. You would have to do some research, but my understanding it is not addictive nor narcotic. I use if for sleep "emergencies." When I sleep that well my PD symptoms are usually better the next day as well. I think some Dr will prescribe it for sleep.

Try Cannabis as an external cream / salve, rubbed onto your skin over any aches and pain , it does not get to your brain that way and it very much relieves the pain ( it does not show on any test because it is not in your bloodstream . ) Taking it internally by smoking it or ingesting then it will go to the brain. I do not do that. Since it does not go to the brain my salve contains all the cannabinoids of a combination of roasted and unroasted cannabis (CBD, THC and all the others) I make it using Coconut oil ( which is also good for your skin , cannabis dissolves in oil, not water ) and home grown cannabis. Easy except the plants keep falling over. You dont believe me , look it up, talk to a doctor.

Those people who were in government and spent billions of dollars with their war on drugs are still involved in the spread of disinformation and lies so they do not have to look so stupid and racist for their past actions but too many of us now know the truth. The USA is the country most involved in this and soon they will be alone in their position against the truth in so many things. We call it American bullshit and it is run by Oil, Pharmacy, and the War Machine and the Internet search engine Companies . MONEY, start a war, then make billions of American dollars whichever side you supply or from both sides if you like. MONEY

Thousands of people saying what I have said to no avail because someone wrote one scary lying article. And it goes on.

Everyone, Thank YOU for all the great input! Forgive my delay, have been traveling and visiting family, I am glad to hear what everyone is doing with the THC/CBD and that you are not experiencing ill side effects even after years. I've read in several places and was told at a couple of pot shops that the CBG is especially good for neurological issues.

I will research the links provided and see what may assist my HWP. Art, I give him all those supplements (melatonin, zing and Magtein (the Mag L-threonate which is supposed to pass the BBB and be helpful for our brains) but not the other magnesiums. There are like 10 different magnesiums so its rather confusing. One thing I know about zinc is that its supposedly better on an empty stomach, but causes tummy discomfort for me and my mom when we take it, so we do take it after a meal - I will start taking it after dinner now.

A quick point about zinc is that with cold season coming up, its a good remedy to start now and up when you get a cold. Art wrote a bit about this in his post her posted above and here is a great article from Dr. Mercola on zinc worth reading.

And I'll try again the cream slave mentioned by Gymsack - maybe that will also help some of his nerve pain caused by bi-lateral ankle replacements 5 years ago (Army Ranger days) which usually only happens at night and he must get up and walk around every night to help the pain go away,

Thanks everyone, I will post back with any changes and results, but that may be a couple of months! Blessings to you all - don't want to be on this journey without you!
