Probably outdated :
It’s not all about CL. Im concerned about people who think CL should be avoided as long as possible. I’m so also concerned about this study which makes it sound like any family doctor can treat Parkinson’s. While sinemet (Carbidopa Levodopa) does not stop or slow PD, CL can make is possible to exercise vigorously one hour per day. Exercise ( like Rock Steady boxing, spin classes, fast walking) CAN stop or slow the progression of PD. Exercise must be vigorous, disciplined and scheduled daily to get the effects This may be hard for younger PWPD because they are busy with work and family. But it is NOT optional if you want to stop or slow PD progression. If necessary pay someone to watch your kids while you exercise! Or cash in on those offers of help from kind friends. And family. Make sure spouses understand and are convinced of the importance of exercise. They may otherwise question why the PWPD gets time to exercise while their spouse does not.
so carbidopa with mucuna may make this possible with possibly less side effects- your ideas on exercise are helpful
It also shocks me how people are anti C/L as well. Its a fantastic med for stabilising life with PD. I understand the prejudice about taking meds at all, for anything, but its a balancing act, which can be amazing for many, not all obviously. For my husband, it's been incredible and he takes approx 2100mg per day.
Can only agree with you that exercise improves symptoms, but every person is different as to whether an hour or more, or less. We have noticed a marked increase in symptoms, across the board since my husband hurt his shoulder about 4 months back in a fall and other niggles from falls over past year. His exercise level has stopped nearly 90% so it's quite amazing to see how his overall health has taken a tumble PD wise. No biking which he loves, running, gym or stretching. He could do something, but he's so pissed off with the fall off his bike down a stream (not PD related) and then his shoulder, that his confidence has taken a hit. I'm letting him take his time but I'm starting to 'nag' now that he must get back into it, with me if need be to get back in shape. He's 61 by the way, young onset 37yrs. Good post Gallowglass...
Possible to look into a recumbent bike to avoid possible falls while maintaining ability to get sufficient exercise.
Yes absolutely chrislind - we are away from home at present for another 7 weeks, but once we get home we will be installing exercise machines and a dedicated room for exercises and different things he wants to do like Boxing, falls practice, biking, running etc... .for those days when going out isn't possible for whatever reason. In the meantime it's more relying on the walking and just getting more active without the fitness centres and road bikes. It's more getting him in the mood, which he will I'm sure, I just wish it was now. Can't rush him.
Some people advise to exercise vigorously every second day but in your experience it is best every single day?
I love daily exercise. I get it all done early so I can still do things during the day. I walk 30 minutes daily and do a collection of Parkinson’s gentle stretches and exercises. Sometimes I also do the recumbent bike kind of like a spin class where you work really hard for a few minutes and then go easier etc. . rock steady boxing is demanding but only twice A week. I also pray the rosary for others and various Catholic chalets while walking. So im helping others while helping myself! If dont exercise I’ll go downhill fast!
Thanks for this, very useful as I have just started taking.
