The way things are

I wonder if I'm the only one who's less than thrilled with many of the aspects of all the buzz surrounding the work at Stanford U and access to the technology with the vibrating glove. The mad dash to "capitalize" on new health-related products makes almost everything else seem trivial and is a persistent reminder of what really counts.

I haven't recently checked, but I'm quite sure, if it hasn't happened already, we will see a steady stream of Tass glove "knock-offs" of low quality and high cost, all conveniently available at Amazon.com. The whole thingresembles a three ring circus and is typical of the way things "work" around here

Great title for your post.

Yes that is the way things are and with all due respect to the United States of America , it is very much an American thing , and it is spreading, but it does work . A system built on capitalism and relying on supply and demand will eventually produce the best products to address the needs of the most people at the lowest price that will ensure that a supply continues that will produce enough profit to motivate enough people to improve the design , make it less expensive etc. You will notice that I said "eventually ".

I understand the frustration but time and again we have witnessed what happens when governments or associations try to get involved to tweak the system to get something done faster without regard to all aspects. They have been sort of successful a few times. It worked bringing vaccine to the world to stop the virus and we only lost a couple million people and there where still claims that companies were profiting too much. It works during war.

Governments in free capitalist countries recognize that to do the least damage to the system they must help the process start with incentives and then back away . Strangely , it used to be that the opposite to capitalism was communism but now those other countries use a form of capitalism mixed with dictatorial rule .

You are free to find a better system , let freedom reign

God bless America

On the other hand, I know of one Communist country that has profited immediately and immensely from copyright and trademark infringement and theft of intellectual property. That is where the Amazon stuff comes from.

What a load of BS. Of all the quackery I've seen pop up on these forums this is the worst. You obviously have no idea how healthcare or health research is funded. And your grasp of government and the various "isms" is childish at best.

busters- dad , other than name calling and insults do you have anything intelligent to say or is that your full range of comment , and thought.

You first. You didn't say a single intelligent thing in your comments, and when called out on your BS you OF COURSE respond like the worst, most self absorbed of the baby boomers. And then point out you are Canadian. A Canadian with SOCIALIST healthcare. It's past your bedtime gramps.

it is not perfect, nor is democracy or freedom but it is the best we have got

we must not let detractors use the imperfections to destroy what we have built.

The rule of law does not exist in China , North Vietnam or some of Russia .

Without the rule of law we are all lost.

Without the rule of Law , we go backwards into dictatorship, racism and slavery and unimaginable terror. We are standing on the shoulders of giants, Imperfect giants but giants nun the less, like Franklin, and Jefferson and Washington and Sir John A Macdonald who saw the potentials and acted with constitutions and law and the result "The way things are".

I am not as willing to be dismissive of the efforts of Dr. Tass and it seems like when a researcher wants to pursue research there are many guidelines that must be followed making it harder to get the show on the road so to speak

I spoke to Dr. Mischley about the glove. She said don't count on it (for various reasons), there are other things like diet and exercise that are more of a safe bet. I was super bummed to hear it, but have turned to intermittent fasting and keto, meditation and exercise and therapy. I realized that we are gifted so much knowledge and if I am not using that knowledge to do everything I can, it keeps that elusive life I want further away.

What are her various reasons?

As someone using the gloves, yes, I’d like to know:what are her various reasons ?

Can you elaborate on some of her reasons? We all know how important diet and exercise are and I am fortunate that I am in a position to vigorously exercise. However, I find it hard to believe that diet and exercise alone can work as well as the Tass gloves did on that Asian man who was unable to walk but is now able to do so, thanks to the gloves (assuming the video was truthful!). So I'd be quite curious what Dr. Mischley's opinions are.

I am puzzled by her comment. Even the various DIY gloves have shown encouraging results based on the accounts here in HU and elsewhere. I also would like to know her reasons.

You are right to be concerned about the perversion of healthcare by capitalist greed. But that's why so many here are doing constructive work in other thread on building open source gloves. The gloves may not work for everyone, but that is true for most Parkinson's drugs/treatments due to its personal nature. High dose thiamine is a perfect example of a treatment that is already helping many people but gets NO money from groups like the Fox Foundation. If a drug company can't patent it to make billions in the next ten years, they won't bother. And if you aren't a drug company with millions to spend, Fox won't help you with research.

But don't give up hope. The power of personal computing and the connectivity of the internet are giving us things like Thiamine and the gloves. They can patent the gloves, but that will never stop people from building their own. Yes there will be quacks that sell knockoffs that don't work. But eventually it will be easy enough to sell knockoffs that DO work. Even if it violates patent law. There is a company selling red light/laser devices that have some evidence of helping. They are super way over-priced. But there are also devices that are just being sold to regrow hair that use the same wavelengths. Still not "cheap" but they will get there. They may yet come up with an immune therapy that "fixes" the problem, and hopefully it will eventually become affordable for everyone. But I think that a combination of all these things will prove effective in the meantime.

And ignore the flag-waving "free-dumb" sellers on here that try to pat you on the head and tell you it's all for the best. Screw that. If the system wants to sacrifice your life for it's profit, help build another system that starves it to death.

Speaking of capitalist greed, I saw an ad for a wrist wrap designed to calm my hand tremor. Not wanting to spend $50 I instead wrapped my wrist in Cutter elastic tape. It's been on for 24 hours and I don't think it's helping. Maybe I need to add magnets...
