AAV-GAD Gene Therapy

Did anyone hear of AAV-GAD gene therapy? I have a chance to get into a phase 1/2 trial, but information is somewhat limited. The original developing company went bankrupt, and a new company bought the rights to the therapy. The trails are being held at reputable sites like Yale, Columbia , and Cornell. Infusion of the gene is much like DBS. Any information or thoughts would be helpful. Thanks

Interesting article. I do find it odd that the therapy is moving into phase 3 trial, the company goes bankrupt in 2012, and no other company picks up the therapy for 10 years. Is the pipeline for Parkinson’s that slow? I seems there is this therapy, if effective, could be better than DBS.

If the original sponsor goes bankrupt, the delay for another to pick up the therapy could be anywhere from quick to never. Entirely depending on whether someone else is interested. I was surprised that it did seem to be effective.

Exactly! I spoke to a doctor at one of the sites who seemed very positive about the trial. I am curious as to how gene therapy handles disease progression.

Does this study suggest that taking GABA supplements might produce similar results?

Interesting question. My searches on the matter were uninformative. I saw one allegation that it does not cross the blood-brain barrier but that was unconfirmed. It is already pretty common in the diet. So, dunno.

Looks really interesting. I wonder, would they let you speak to someone from the original trial?

Maybe they had to wait for the bankruptsy proceedings?
