Ketones form when there is little carbohydrates in the diet. Carbs require a lot of water in the system. When eschewing carbs the body gets rid of the excess water. That leads to constipation. The rapid weight loss seen in the early days of ketogenic diets is from the water loss. Once the carbs are gone the body uses fat for energy. At that point weight loss drops from 10 pounds per week to 1 pound per week. To get rid of water the body excretes sodium into the urine, Low sodium levels can lead to muscle cramps.

I think there is definitely merit in the keto diet, but it’s very very hard to sustain over a long time or indefinitely. To remove all conventional sweet treats, potatoes, rice, pasta, and bread difficult. You have to become a creative cook and buy numerous obscure ingredients. Low carb is easier to live with, sustainable and not so harsh on a person who already has enough challenges.
