day to day things such as tidying, cleaning the car, or gardening help to add movement to our day – and could be performed more vigorously to further increase heart rate for a home-based HIT hit.

Not enough time to exercise? High-intensity training can fit into your daily life
30+ years ago Laval U. did a study. Two groups of students. One group did an hour of mild effort on a stat bike. The second group did 20 minutes of extreme effort. The mild group had mild results in weight loss. The extreme group spent fewer calories but lost a staggering amount of weight. Later studies determined the extreme work stimulated hormone release such as Growth Hormone. Then Dr Mercola put a name on it: HIIT, high intensity interval training.
I was wondering about vigorous house/yard work - thanks for this post!
The HIIT protocol from Dr Mercola depends on getting the heart rate to 90% of maximum. You'd need a heart rate monitor for that. The standard for max is 220 minus your age. It can be approximated as somewhere between barfing and not being able to talk and hold a conversation. I don't know how house or yard work might get your heart rate into that 90% level.

Canddy, for a reference point, a recent AARP article describes 80-85% max heartrate as "can't keep a conversation going because you're breathless"
