"This article explores the gut-brain axis and foods that are beneficial to its health."
"Your gut microbes also produce a neurotransmitter called gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), which helps control feelings of fear and anxiety"
"If your immune system is switched on for too long, it can lead to inflammation, which is associated with a number of brain disorders like depression and Alzheimer’s disease."
"Probiotics that affect the brain are also called psychobiotics. Both probiotics and prebiotics have been shown to reduce levels of anxiety, stress and depression."
Thanks Marc. I spent about a week looking for psychobiotics last month and came up empty. Just searched for the one they mentioned, Bifidobacterium longum NCC3001, and nothing
Great point laglag. I did find PS128 one but I was too cheap to buy it.
Plus... last week the fine folks at Solace saw that I posted about PS128 on reddit so they posted offering to answer questions.
So I asked "I'd be interested in what results you have seen in humans taking PS 128 please".
They posted a backtracking answer, and then deleted their post, so all I have is the snippet of their answer from my e-mail notification: "Woo! Ok, so we have 2 different ways to approach this question. First, the scientific studies done in clinical settings ... want to preface this by saying, these are not cures, and partnering with a g..."
This did not engender confidence in them. But who knows. Maybe PS128 is awesome.
It was mentioned in the article you linked to in your post:
One small study of people with irritable bowel syndrome and mild-to-moderate anxiety or depression found that taking a probiotic called Bifidobacterium longum NCC3001 for six weeks significantly improved symptoms
Thanks for posting, I ve read it before, but really like this article and a good reminder of foods, probiotics and pre biotics that can help gut brain axis. When researching on the net Healthline produce some good articles. I like the way they set out their information and references.
In my case I have singularly focused in on the Lactobacillus Plantarum strain, given it is the primary strain in the solace product (5x more expensive) which was researched for PD with good results. The reason for my singular strain focus is that gut bacteria can interfere with the effectiveness of levodopa treatment and getting it to the brain, reducing its effect and then requiring a higher dose.
