Any experience with Thiamine [B1] holiday?

If you have been taking HDT for a long time, have you ever had Thiamine holiday?

If yes please share your experience.

How long did your holiday last?

Any regression of symptoms?

How long did it take to see the regression of the symptoms from the day you stopped taking?

How did you resume the dosage?

How long did it take to see your symptoms relieved again?

Many thanks

I have been taking HDT for about 2-1/2 years with great success. HDT restored my balance, reduced fatigue and eliminated my tremors(100% reduction after 2 years). My pre-HDT brain needed to think about every movement my body made which put a lot of strain on the brain and was exhausting. Reaching for a glass, getting up from a chair, getting dressed, etc. required a conscious thought to complete the action. HDT allowed me to initiate movement without thinking, and thus freeing up the brain to think other thoughts more clearly.

I started HDT at 2000 mgs/day and had improvements in my balance within 3 days. Along with the HDT, I switched to a mostly plant-based diet, exercise daily, socialize often and avoid stressful situations. I take 1/4 Sinemet tablet and 2 Now brand Dopa Mucuna 3 or 4 times a day depending on my activity level. I feel like I am doing quite well at 6 years post PD diagnosis (but at least 10 years with symptoms).

I took a holiday from HDT after 18 months to see what would happen if I stopped supplementing with B1. I did not notice any changes until around 3 weeks when I started noticing hesitation in my movements and stutter-steps. Also a slight hand tremor especially after physical activity.

At around 4 weeks, it was obvious to me (and others) that I was having a harder time with movement. Everything required more effort. I felt more fatigue and had brain fog. I was experiencing slight freezing episodes and my tremor was returning. I was clearly heading back into a state I never want to be in again.

I resumed HDT at 2000 mgs/day after a 1 month break. It only took a few days for me to feel improvements and within a week, I was back to feeling good again.

Initially Solgar then Vtacost directly from Vitacost.com

HDT removed all my symptoms except the tremor. So the tremor went away after 2 years of 2g/day HDT? I started HDT about 3.5 years ago at 2g/day and a year later I switched to 1g/day.

Any deliberate interruption since you have started taking HDT?

Yes, for 3 months. The issues started to come back.

Hi, Kia! I'm guessing that you have either taken a B1 holiday or you are considering it. If you already did it, would you mind sharing your experience? If you are just considering it, would you mind saying why? I have taken at least 1 gram of B1 daily for 3 years. I have considered taking a holiday just to see if it makes any difference, but because I feel so good right now, I have followed the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" philosophy. 😊

Hi Jim, you are right. I am on B1 holiday after nearly 4 years of taking 3grs daily. I stopped taking HDT from the end of June . I have not noticed any difference yet. I will report back here if I notice anything significant. I plan to resume it in a few weeks time maybe in lower amount depending on response to it.

The reason for having a holiday is just to follow late Dr C recommendations.

I’ve taken B1 since 2017. It’s removed rigidity, made movement easier, and given me more energy. I’ve taken several holidays since then. I break for just four days usually. After four days without B1 I feel I have less energy and after I restart I feel back to normal by day 2. If I don’t take a break I can start to get edgy and anxious. My current plan is to have this mini break every three months. I think it does the system good.
