PWP

It still amazes me that 'PWP' is an acceptable TAB as it should be 'PBTFP' People Being Treated For Parkinsons.

From the info I'm aware of including DAT scans, it's not until the brain has has a PM that PD can be confirmed.

If you are dx with PD by reference to generally accepted criteria (like the London Brain Bank criteria or any of the more recent ones), respond to levodopa and have a datscan showing DT loss, for all intents and purposes you have PD, since you'll be getting PD treatment. Whether or not LB are detected in a post mortem (which you probably wont have anyway unless you donate your brain to research) is probably academic.

There may come a time when PD is more stratified (hopefully) and further differentiation is required whilst we are still alive.

it is accepted that datscans show you have an 80% chance you have Parkinson's

My point is, until it is proven 100% you have Parkinson's then I stand by what I say.

Datscan is not designed to be used as a single dx tool. I am willing to bet that the combination i described above predicts LB pathology in >95% of cases. The remainder still have neurodegeneration treatable (symptomatically) with levodopa so for all practical purposes they had PD too.

No one is forcing you to use the PwP abbreviation, which is good i guess?

>95% still isn't 100%

Okay well then you can start using your preferred abbreviation.

My preferred version is the correct version.

Now to get the media to stop saying died from parkinsons

kevowpd profile image
kevowpd in reply toAllypally49

Ok well maybe it'll catch on.

There's nothing wrong with saying died from PD. If PD Dementia, aspiration pneumonia or SUDPAR (or presumably any other number of things that i cant think of right now) bring an early end to an otherwise healthy individual, died from PD is accurate although not particularly detailed.

Unfortunately saying someone has died from Parkinson's puts a lot of fear into people's lifes.

You can die from a fall etc but not from Parkinson's.

Why say it when you don't die from Parkinson's, why lie?

Show me where and who says you actually die from Parkinson's?

kevowpd profile image
kevowpd in reply toAllypally49

You dont think PD Dementia kills you? Ok then.

Allypally49 profile image
Allypally49 in reply tokevowpd

it's not what i think, nor should it be what you THINK!.

All the doctors say that PARKINSON'S disease itself is NOT terminal.

A patient does not die because of PARKINSONS disease but they die along with it.

However, people die because of the SIDE EFFECTS that appear over the period because of the worsening condition of Parkinson's disease.

Q.E.D.

I'd give up if I was you there's no way you are going to change the facts.

kevowpd in reply toAllypally49

So people dont die of PD, they die of the 'side effects' of PD?

Refer page 30:

cdc.gov/nchs/data/nvsr/nvsr...

Cause of death: PD. Count: 31,963.

give up pal...it's dementia

kevowpd profile image
kevowpd in reply toAllypally49

It literally says 'Parkinson Disease'. In any event, dementia is a part of PD.

Allypally49 profile image
Allypally49 in reply tokevowpd

what part of 'You don't die from Parkinson's disease' do you not understand?

kevowpd profile image
kevowpd in reply toAllypally49

The part where are you are so self assured about the accuracy of it despite it being obviously incorrect.

"...it is accepted that datscans show you have an 80% chance you have Parkinson's...."

Sheesh! I had a DAT scan weeks ago. It showed imbalance between the halves of the substantia nigra which matches with my left hand tremor. I take Rytary three times daily and get a mild 'dopamine rush' within an hour of the morning dose. Rytary has no effect on my tremor. And I don't know what the 'Off' period feels like because I don't seem to have one. So do I really have PD? This is the question I asked last year. If I am in the 20% group what does that mean?

Allypally49 profile image

as far as I have read no one knows until they examine your brain.

but from what you say, doctors will treat you as having Parkinson's

as far as your tremor look at B1 thiamine and/or cos oil

PWP vs. PBTFP ....As Eric Stratton rhetorically said while making an impassioned impromptu debate-styled speech protesting his college fraternity losing its charter, upon hearing a brother housemate interrupt him sotto voce to him about the speech, "What are you doing Eric, you're pre-med, not pre-law..." ...What's the difference?

And as Douglas Adams once said, " 'you've got to have a sense of proportion' she used to say to him 28 times a day."

But thanks anyway for the Vaudeville bit Ally, it's been a rough day and it's nice to have a little slapstick to relieve the situation. If you have any more obtuse observations, do sing out, always happy for a laugh.

Because of your PD you may suffer a medical incident (choke, pneumonia) that will result in your death.
