An article in the National Post newspaper ( a very good paper) by Sarah Knapton drew my attention. A quick Synopsis

As people age the protective caps at the ends of chromosomes called telomeres shorten , causing DNA to become damaged and cells to stop replicating. At the same time " zombie " senescent cells build up preventing regeneration. It is believed this is responsible for frailty and ill health as people grow older. Some Scientists also believe that the above process is responsible for Alzheimers, Parkinsons , Arthritis, Cancer and heart disease .

Research at Tel Aviv University in Israel, published in the journal - Aging , described trials with 35 healthy adults over 65 years of age were placed in a hyper baric chamber 90 minutes / 5 days a week over 3 months breathing 100 % Oxygen through a mask.

Results show an increase in length of telomeres 20 % , to the typical length of a 40 year old . Obesity, smoking, lack of physical activity, vitamin deficiency, and inflammation speed up the shortening of telmeres . This protocal shows the possibility of reversing aging at the basic cellular-biological level. The Holy Grail of the biology of aging.
