Undigested medication - advice needed

Does (or has) anyone experienced medication passing through undigested?

My neurologist has only come across this once before and that patient had a known pre-existing gastro condition.

I am about to add CL (dose to be confirmed) to 8mg Ropinirole slow release and feel concerned that my gut is not going to be helpful.

Any advice gratefully received - thank you so much.

Yes. I suffered from diarrhea for several months during 2011, the medicine went straight through however, at that time my symptoms were not as debilitating as now.

Some people chew up the pills for faster action and better absorption.

The Ropinirole is a slow release pill, so chewing it is not an option, sadly.

I think Lena referred to people chewing the c/l, at least the IR (immediate release) version. I chew mine fairly regularly, especially if I am without water.

You don't say what kind of problem you are having, stomach, intestinal? I use BLACK WALNUT WORMWOOD COMPLEX, made by NOW. It really helps. Kills an overgrowth of bacteria.

I don’t know where the problem is either Parkie, hence asking if anyone had had a similar experience. I don’t look for the evidence, I only know if it’s obvious, so I can’t say how often I am not getting the prescribed dose.

Sweet picture of you and your family :-)

There are many possible reasons for the non-absorption of medication.

From the ropinirole label:

" A high-fat diet may delay the absorption, and it is better absorbed in a fasting state."

For another example, here is a study of gut bacteria turning levodopa into an inactive substance:

If your digestion is otherwise working normally, it is unlikely to be passing through undigested.

If you are able to tolerate a patch that is one way around the situation.

Thank you: I hadn’t taken on board the high fat issue in regard to Ropinirole and as yet I am not taking LC - dosing tbc at the end of the week. And I will ask about the patch.

You could try black walnut, it helps.

Watch this on gut health it has some good information.

youtube.com/watch?v=SRdEEC4...

Are you taking any antacids or medications that affect digestion?

If you are digesting food too fast it seems like it could be a gut irritation caused by a food intolerance. I think from watching this video I would try eliminating gluten and dairy for a while to see if it helps. He suggests swallowing whole corn kernels or eating beetroot to get a time for how long it takes for a food to transit your gut. You should see the whole kernels or red poop when it comes through. Then you can see if it is taking too little time to come through. It should take 12-24 hours he says. He lists things to improve digestion later in the video.

12-24 hrs is quite quick, see this article medlineplus.gov/ency/articl...

He says around 12- 24 is good for a healthy gut . That article is talking about the average gut and probably people going for that test haven’t got a healthy gut. In fact I’d say many or most people don’t have a healthy gut any more with the Standard American diet.

Hi LAJ, that’s very speculative and all the estimates I could find were higher than 12 hours

I don't think my husband has had this problem but a few thoughts:

If it's adding the CL that you are concerned with, the chewing idea should help with that. Or dissolving the CL first.

As for the time released one, is it a tablet or a capsule? Cuz if it's a capsule, you could remove the capsule. That way, the time-release will still work. If a tablet, then that idea won't help at all.

Another thing is to be extra careful with the directions as to whether to take with or without food. From the looks of things in your photo you must be pretty busy and maybe don't always get time to be careful at pill time.

Thank you hon. I am not taking CL yet, the dosage will be confirmed at the end of the week.

Park-Bear alerted me to high fats possibly interfering with the Ropinirole digestion, so I’ll avoid those until later in the day.

Those are grandchildren in the photo, cuties but I get to hand them back at the end of the day!
