Mold toxins linked to PD, removal of toxins reversed symptoms
I moved to a new flat few months ago. Surprise surprise, it has a moisture and mold problem. I'm doing what I can to mitigate the issue, but I'm terrified that it's making my Parkinson's disease worse.
There's the old classic study here which shows that volatile organic compounds from mold can be neurotoxins. Isn't that nice?
ARTICLE: Fungal-derived semiochemical 1-octen-3-ol disrupts dopamine packaging and causes neurodegeneration
But I've found other studies which show that it isn't just one chemical compound. Mold can be bad news more generally. For example, mold can impair mitochondria (and mitochondrial dysfunction is another mechanism in the pathology of Parkinson's disease).
Mold can also cause inflammation, and that's also bad and potentially instrumental in Parkinson's disease progression.
ARTICLE: Mold and mycotoxins: effects on the neurological and immune systems in humans
pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/153...
Here's some quotes from that article.
Fungal fragments occur in indoor air as biocontaminants. Potentially toxic and immunogenic byproducts of fungi and molds include mycotoxins, 1,3-alpha-D-glucans, extracellular poly-sacharrides, exodigestive enzymes, andsolvents. In addition, trichothecenes, ochratoxinA, sterigmatocystin, and other mycotoxins have been identified in ventilation duct dust and in the air in buildings where occupants have experienced adverse health effects related to mold exposure. The worst-case scenario appears to be repeated episodes of water damage that promote fungal growth and mycotoxin production, followed by drier conditions leading to release of spores and hyphal fragments (Nielsen, 2003).
Occupants of affected structures develop multiple organ symptoms and have adverse effects of the upper and lower respiratory system, central and peripheral nervous system, skin, gastrointestinal tract, kidneys and urinary tract, connective tissue, and the musculoskeletalsystem.
Human illness caused by fungi can result via one or all of the following:
(1) mycotic infections (mycoses)
(2) fungal rhino-sinusitis
(3) IgE-mediated sensitivity and asthma
(4) hypersensitivity pneumonitis and related
inflammatory pulmonary diseases
(5) cytotoxicity
(6) immune suppression/modulation
(7) mitochondrial toxicity
(8) carcinogenicity
(9) nephrotoxicity
(10) the formation of nuclear and mitochondrial DNA adducts
(11) Finally, in the infectious state, molds secrete extracellular digestive enzymes (EDE) that cause tissue destruction, angioinvasion, thrombosis, infarction and other manifestations of mycosis.
All of these items have multiple scientific citations (which I removed from my quote to make it easier to read).
Basically, I see this, and I need to change my underwear because it scares me so much.
Here’s a test you can have. You need to find a practitioner you can get it through I think.

I am planning on getting the Organic Acids Test (OAT) done for my mother. (if you see the sample report for OAT - attached- there is that one marker (item #7)- Arabinose, that Dr. Laurie Miscley was referring to in one of her videos, among so many other items- like Mitochondria Markers, Neurotransmitter Metabolites etc. ) . Will give it a thought before ordering. Any input is appreciated.
Looks like it is worth a try. Seems that one cannot just order the test kit by buying it on the site (online) ; rather you either need your doctor's referral or a third party (where a designated doctor would recommend the test for you) to get the test kit delivered to your home.

We asked our doc for a new test from Great Plains Lab. We will be sending it out today. Lucky for us, we have saunas to sweat out the toxins.
Nice to know. I came to know that you can order the test via 3rd party ( 2 of them on the website) that have their own doctors who will order the test on your behalf by default. The cost of having that doctor is is included in the test price.
Well I’ve ordered it too. He had the organic acid test a couple of years ago and had high arabinose so the natural doctor had him take allimed and berberine with probiotics as follows
Allimed 1 X 3x per day, Thorne berberine 500 1x 2 Per day for 3 days then
Allimed 2 X 3x per day, Thorne berberine 500 2 x 2 Per day for 4 days then
Probiotic Pro4-50 lactose free multistrain spectrum ceuticals.
1x 2 for 3 days then 2x 4 for 4 days
Repeat this cycle
This made him feel quite sick at first but eventually got rid of rosacea and acne and his Parkinson’s smell. So I will be interesting to see if there is any fungus there still. He has done this cycle repeatedly but I had given him a break from it over the last few monthS.
He also dropped all sugar and gluten from his diet and seed oils.
If doing this from the start again I would do the diet change for a few months first to try and reduce levels a bit first as it is quite brutal the die off doing both at once.
Thanks for sharing this info. I will go ahead and order the test sometime next week. No harm in getting the test. A first step , but an important one for subsequent ones.
When you refer to Parkinson's smell - can you be more specific and let us know some details - what, how, etc.
Thanks for the post. It is always a concern to know if you have mold. Black mold is the worst.
