You’re Eating Plastic in Every Bite of This Food, New Research Finds.

A new study found microplastics in multiple types of this food.

AMANDA MCDONALD.

SEPTEMBER 6, 2020.

There have been several food recalls lately because of traces of plastic in some foods. For instance, almost 60,000 pounds of Pilgrim's Pride chicken nuggets were recalled back in June because they may contain plastic. But scientists have even found plastic in things that haven't been recalled. Take protein powder, for instance (even organic brands!). And a brand new study has uncovered seafood plastic in some supermarket staples...

Horrible news - but not unexpected.

I stopped eating mussels because researchers have found bivalves (mussels, oysters, clams) to be heavily contaminated with microplastics. Uncontaminated bivalves are IMO one of the most health-promoting foods and a whole foods plant based diet supplemented with bivavles would be ideal for many people.

Thanks for insights. Very informative.

"She also notes that the scientists were most surprised by the amount of plastic in sardines. Eat 14 servings of the small fish and you will have eaten around the same weight as one plastic straw. "

This is a problem.

And I've been eating sardines as relatively safe.

Ideally it would be nice to eat shellfish with no contaminants. Who hasn’t crunched on sand or mud when eating shellfish. Micro plastic is the least of your trouble otherwise they would not sell food and water in plastic containers. As fo the plastic straw if you munched on one and eat it it would pass through your intestines and do no harm whatsoever.

"Flaws says microplastic particles can also accumulate polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), other chemicals that are linked to harmful health effects, including various cancers, a weakened immune system, reproductive problems and more. Once these chemicals are inside of us, even low doses may have an effect."
