Abstract

Background: Oxidative stress is involved in the progression of Parkinson's disease (PD). Recent studies have confirmed that molecular hydrogen (H₂) functions as a highly effective antioxidant in cultured cells and animal models. Drinking H₂-dissolved water (H₂-water) reduced oxidative stress and improved Parkinson's features in model animals.

Methods: In this a placebo-controlled, randomized, double-blind, parallel-group clinical pilot study, the authors assessed the efficacy of H₂ -water in Japanese patients with levodopa-medicated PD. Participants drank 1,000 mL/day of H₂-water or pseudo water for 48 weeks.

Results: Total Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) scores in the H₂-water group (n=9) improved (median, -1.0; mean ± standard deviation, -5.7 ± 8.4), whereas UPDRS scores in the placebo group (n=8) worsened (median, 4.5; mean ± standard deviation, 4.1 ± 9.2). Despite the minimal number of patients and the short duration of the trial, the difference was significant (P<0.05).

Conclusions: The results indicated that drinking H₂-water was safe and well tolerated, and a significant improvement in total UPDRS scores for patients in the H₂-water group was demonstrated.

I Googled it and found that. Interesting. Wanted to know what H2 water was.

I've been meaning to have a look at this again.

I have considered getting a device to prepare hydrogen water. I started looking into it once around a year ago.

I remember hearing from some source that molecular hydrogen is an antioxidant itself, plus it apparently activates other antioxidants. That's promising. Molecular hydrogen should also get through the blood brain barrier rather easily, if I recall correctly.

I also wonder if chlorine in the water is an issue when you are using electrolysis to separate the hydrogen from the oxygen in water. I think maybe someone was addressing that point.

As is often the case, things were just a little bit complicated, so I did research, but didn't follow through for awhile.

Maybe this can be a little nudge to look into this thing more.

Working with hydrogen is very dangerous, especially if allowed to reach an explosive concentration. It is lighter than air, so you don't want to be in a room that the roof can trap it.

park_bear profile image
park_bear in reply topvw2

Good to keep in mind, but as long as the amounts involved are similar to the small quantities used in the above study that should not be a problem.

pvw2 profile image
pvw2 in reply topark_bear

It's more an issue if you're making a do-it-yourself system. For example the danger in jumping a car battery is, if you hook the batteries up backwards, you generate hydrogen from water very quickly at the charged battery, and a spark ususally causes the battery to explode.

ElliotGreen in reply topvw2

Good thought, but Park_bear's right I think. You can buy devices to separate hydrogen and dissolve it in the water, but it's not going to be nearly enough to be flammable or dangerous.

park_bear in reply toElliotGreen

Hydrogen is the ideal antioxidant since it combines with any loose oxygen to form water.

Chlorine in the water is always a problem.

I was thinking about trying, Dr. MERCOLA OFFERS THE HYDROGEN TABLET. I POSTED A VIDEO.

The sound from the Dr is very poor, I struggle to pick out his words or follow his narration

ElliotGreen profile image
ElliotGreen in reply toGrumpy77

Might be your device? The sound is fine for me (at least the first minute is, I'm saving it for later).

Grumpy77 profile image
Grumpy77 in reply toElliotGreen

No not my device. I said to the doc... not the man asking the questions... When he talks, i pick out his words very clearly. When the doc talks, not so clear anymore. If it's my device, it will be consistent whoever is talking. Listen to both of them speak for much of the video. Initially he was just about audible... but as he went on he became less audible (definitely hear him but not pick out his string of words)

Other point of confusion.... How come he is a doctor since he said during the interview that he barely has any education

If you go to Mercola.com, he might have a transcript. I have followed him for many, many years. He has interesting articles on maintaining health.

Kangen water, too expensive. There are some DIY but electrode quality may be an issue

bepo profile image
bepo in reply toJayPwP

We are looking at the Kangen system. We don't know very much about it, and certainly are going to research more. There is a person visiting in our small town, who has given me many science article to read about hydrogen water. She sells the Kangen. We'll see. It's all about quality of life, and a reduction of symptoms.

I believe it's very expensive but if it works then it may be worth it.

One question i would like to ask is who sponsored OR funded the trials? Wouldn't they be pressured due to the funds they receive to come up with favourable results?

bepo profile image
bepo in reply toGrumpy77

Always a good point to question where the research studies originate. Usually, studies are done by the pharmaceuticals and then their results are passed on to others.

Grumpy77 profile image
Grumpy77 in reply tobepo

That's even worse, if you meant they did the trials themselves and passed it to others for peer review

Oxidative stress can be argued as the cause of most disease. In high school we used a flashlight battery to break water down into hydrogen and oxygen. The Mercola video says hydrogen in solution improves signs but maybe it's the oxygen that does the work. I've posted about ozone as an oxidant. Lots of data showing ozone's effect on mitochondria and the 2,3 DPG enzyme which regulates hemoglobin's use of oxygen.

My understanding is that ozone, (we use an ozone sauna,) and hydrogen water work in different ways. We use ozone to detoxify the Agent Orange my husband got in VietNam.

Hydrogen water and PD

Abstract

Background: Our previous randomized double-blind study showed that drinking hydrogen (H2) water for 48 weeks significantly improved the total Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) score of Parkinson's disease (PD) patients treated with levodopa. We aim to confirm this result using a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled multi-center trial. Methods: Changes in the total UPDRS scores from baseline to the 8(th), 24(th), 48(th), and 72(nd) weeks, and after the 8(th) week, will be evaluated. The primary endpoint of the efficacy of this treatment in PD is the change in the total UPDRS score from baseline to the 72(nd) week. The changes in UPDRS part II, UPDRS part III, each UPDRS score, PD Questionnaire-39 (PDQ-39), and the modified Hoehn and Yahr stage at these same time-points, as well as the duration until the protocol is finished because additional levodopa is required or until the disease progresses, will also be analyzed. Adverse events and screening laboratory studies will also be examined. Participants in the hydrogen water group will drink 1000 mL/day of H2 water, and those in the placebo water group will drink normal water. One-hundred-and-seventy-eight participants with PD (88 women, 90 men; mean age: 64.2 [SD 9.2] years, total UPDRS: 23.7 [11.8], with levodopa medication: 154 participants, without levodopa medication: 24 participants; daily levodopa dose: 344.1 [202.8] mg, total levodopa equivalent dose: 592.0 [317.6] mg) were enrolled in 14 hospitals and were randomized.

Discussion: This study will confirm whether H2 water can improve PD symptoms.pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/271...
