High dose B12 had a more recognizable benefit for me than high dose B1 and high dose B3, but I am a big proponent of all three of them.

B1, 4g daily.

I am adjusting my dose schedule:

Two tablets C/L 25/100 IR at 6:30, 10:30, 2:30, 6:30

C/L 50/200 CR at bedtime.

Daily, weekly, monthly, we have to stay on top of Parkinson's being flexible.

Jim, would you mind to share your dose of B12 that brought benefit?

jimcaster in reply tofaridaro

Sure! I take 2,000 mcg per day, which is about 83,250 % of the recommended daily value for B12....

B12 Causes Psychiatric Symptoms: B12 deficiency can cause almost any psychiatric symptom, from anxiety, and panic to depression and hallucinations. This is because B12 deficiencies trigger symptoms in the nervous system and red blood cells.Feb 2, 2012

That's very unusual for a PwP, but do whatever makes sense.

I am sure you have consulted with a health practitioner about the B12 dosage.

“Unlike most other vitamins, B12 is stored in substantial amounts, mainly in the liver, until it is needed by the body. If a person stops consuming the vitamin, the body's stores of this vitamin usually take about 3 to 5 years to exhaust”.

in reply toKia17

That may be true for many, but not all. I am a perfectly healthy person (spouse of a PWP) and after feeling terrible for months my doctor tested me for B12, and I was so low I immediately needed injections. This, despite the fact that I eat red meat, white meat, and organ meats. After several months of weekly injections my level was raised to low-normal. It appears that my body just cannot process B12 from the foods I eat, so storing it is my liver is impossible.

As an aside, I have begun dissolving our multivitamins and B complex and other supplement in water, then missing with a more tasty beverage. It seems the supplements are far, far better absorbed this way compared to traditional hard tablets. Both myself and the PWP notice a positive change.

With B12, sublingual is probably the best for people who are compromised with gut absorption due to lack of intrinsic factor, deficient hydrochloric acid. or intestinal health.

Yes, the B12 supplement dosage and source were determined by a medical professional. I think/hope there is little or no excess being stored. I'm due to have fairly extensive blood tests done again to determine vitamin and homocysteine levels again.

in reply tojimcaster

Yes, sublingual is best.

My concern is that if the B12 cannot be absorbed in the intestines, then what of the B1, B6, and other vitamins? Are they, also, not being absorbed?

That is the purpose of carbidopa. To divert it to brain.

Roy and others:

The purpose of carbidopa? it "inhibits" the enzyme that breaks down the levodopa. It doesn't "divert" the levodopa into the brain. Which is why use of carbidopa long term can cause problems in many PD patients.

The summer I first showed signs of PD I also had a severe episode of B12 deficiency, whether that kicked the PD into showing symptoms, I don't know for sure. I know I had paresthesias all over my body, so bad I didn't sleep for 3 days. Got a B12 shot and immediately reduced my symptoms.
